Threads of Us is a Jamaican feature-length independent film made possible by the vision, creative and financial collaboration of eight production companies. Inspired to pioneer a more nuanced conversation around film making in Jamaica and the Caribbean. 

Directed by Mykal Cushnie and written and produced by Donisha Prendergast, this film was crafted by a local crew and developed through a mentorship model that trained 15 interns alongside industry veterans. Positioned as a social impact film to rejuvenate a culturally relevant audience based in the Caribbean and the diaspora. This grassroots model seeks to connect the thread of us.

The Synopsis

Set against the vibrant backdrop of Jamaica’s 63rd Independence Day celebrations, Threads of Us is a lyrical, intimate story about love, struggle, and the delicate weave of hope that holds a people together. Danielle, a young seamstress with dreams stitched into every garment she makes, crosses paths with Malcolm, a hardworking warehouse packer with a complicated past. They share rides home on the evening bus, slowly stitching a connection that feels timeless yet fragile. But just as their bond deepens, a single accusation threatens to unravel everything.

As Danielle fights to hold onto her faith in him and their shared future, they both must confront the question: Is love enough to stitch two wounded souls together against a world so quick to tear them apart? Amid the colorful parades, fireworks, and national pride of Independence celebrations, their personal fight for freedom and dignity mirrors Jamaica’s own fight for identity, justice, and unity.

What do we have on our side?

We Have Wrapped Production!

• Initial Cash Investment for Development & Production: We have already raised the fees for Development and Production.
• A Polished Script: We have a complete, edited screenplay that has already been filmed!
• Four Red Carpet Movie Premieres: There are four big screen red carpet movie premieres to be held in Jamaica, Florida, Georgia, and New York.
• Distribution: The film has an exclusive Red Carpet preview at the Bob Marley Museum Theatre in 2025.
• An All-Star Cast: Well, our lead characters are played by Reggae Superstar Sevana (Anna-Sharé Blake), Jamaican-Canadian Actor Shomari Downer, Jamaican Culture Icon Owen “Blakka” Ellis, and many more.

How will the funding be used?

The funding from this campaign will be primarily used for Post-Production and Marketing. It will help us with completing a World Class feature film that has all the technicals for theatrical distribution and major streamers. It will also help us with keeping the film visible through different advertising mediums so that fans will know when the movie is available in their area. 

Some of the other areas where we will be using funding:

• Sound: Musical score, music licensing and artiste retainers.
• Editing`
• Color grading

Our goal is to raise $95,000, and if possible, a stretch goal of $125,000.

Risks and Challenges

THREADS OF US is an ambitious project to say the least. The good news is that we have wrapped production. So, while there were challenges, we have made it through production and are currently in the post-production phase. We need YOUR help in getting Threads Of Us to the level of postproduction we know it needs and deserves. Distribution is always a challenge with independent films, but we have some creative strategies ready to get the movie to you beginning with our trailer that was launched on, August 6, 2025.
