Power Dam Road dives deep into a man’s pure and unconditional
passion for farming. Why is this occupation so special to him? What
does Sebastian, 66 year-old Austrian immigrant residing in rural East
Ontario, get in return for his tireless hard work, 365 days a year?
Through a compassionate and contemplative portrait, this short documentary questions the relationship between Man and Land: where and how do we root ourselves? How much depends on Nature? The film unveils not only what “city folks” might not know about agriculture, but also showcases a touching immigration story and a one-of-a-kind dedication to a complex calling.
What we wish to achieve with this documentary is two-fold:
first, to make "city folks" more fond, curious and
open-minded about the realities of small agricultural systems. The
superior level of this goal would ultimately have the audience stop
taking the planet's resources for granted and realize, not only how
all humans are connected, but how all beings are connected: humans,
plants, and everything else capable of growing. This is a
sustainable argument meant to send the message that, as dependents
of Earth, we should start focusing more on what essentially matters,
and less on what we don't need.
The second aim of this film is to debunk stereotypes one might have about old people, and show they are actually immensely more capable, active and crucial to our society than one might think, and demystify rural areas as being "subsidiary": they actually hold the real power, which is precious resources and dedicated workers. The documentary therefore encourages a more connected-to-Nature, slow-paced life, as it certainly does not equal a meaningless and unfruitful one!
The plan to turn this concept into reality is to follow Sebastian through the different steps of his work all year-round by shooting 10-12 days with him in Alexandria, discontinued throughout a whole year: 2-3 days per season, during key months such as October, January, May and August. This way, the documentary can truly explore the agricultural processes depending on the season, placing emphasis on Nature's role (like a character of its own) and Sebastian's adaptability, expertise and knowledge in his work, farm and fields. This idea of "cycle" is the core structure for the film's storytelling. It will establish a clear and poetic timeline, and avoid redundancy, to be better enjoyed by the audience.

In order to do that, our initial goal of $5,000 CAD will contribute to get enough resources to finalize this 30-minute-long documentary and support the talent and community involved. To complete our budget, we then aim to apply for grants by several arts councils or other funding organizations.
We are offering some great perks for your contribution, so please don't forget to check the Rewards section! Any amount is a great help to us, but whether or not you can contribute financially, please support us by sharing this Crowdfundr campaign across your social media channels!

Camila was born and raised in Colombia, then studied Audiovisual Communication at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Cali. Through her career, she has developed multiple sales and negotiation skills, working as a Business Development Manager for NGOs and advertising companies. She has been a producer on short films in Colombia and Peru, plus she loves to participate as a volunteer across different Film Festivals.
Established in Toronto, Camila still focuses on business development, but on the side she supports documentaries as a producer, coordinating fundraising strategies and sponsorships. Power Dam Road is an important project for her because her great-grandfather was a farmer and she was visiting him constantly, getting familiar with life at the farm and appreciating the connection with nature and the countryside.
Fun fact! Camila started theatre acting for plays at five years old, developing a profound passion for the arts. The favorite character she has played is Titania in A Midsummer Night's Dream.
Camila Padilla – Productrice
