Martha Lenoir hasn't added a story.

Power Dam Road dives deep into a man’s pure and unconditional passion for farming. Why is this occupation so special to him? What does Sebastian, 66 year-old Austrian immigrant residing in rural East Ontario, get in return for his tireless hard work, 365 days a year?

Through a compassionate and contemplative portrait, this short documentary questions the relationship between Man and Land: where and how do we root ourselves? How much depends on Nature? The film unveils not only what “city folks” might not know about agriculture, but also showcases a touching immigration story and a one-of-a-kind dedication to a complex calling.

What we wish to achieve with this documentary is two-fold: first, to make "city folks" more fond, curious and open-minded about the realities of small agricultural systems. The superior level of this goal would ultimately have the audience stop taking the planet's resources for granted and realize, not only how all humans are connected, but how all beings are connected: humans, plants, and everything else capable of growing. This is a sustainable argument meant to send the message that, as dependents of Earth, we should start focusing more on what essentially matters, and less on what we don't need.

The second aim of this film is to debunk stereotypes one might have about old people, and show they are actually immensely more capable, active and crucial to our society than one might think, and demystify rural areas as being "subsidiary": they actually hold the real power, which is precious resources and dedicated workers. The documentary therefore encourages a more connected-to-Nature, slow-paced life, as it certainly does not equal a meaningless and unfruitful one!

The plan to turn this concept into reality is to follow Sebastian through the different steps of his work all year-round by shooting 10-12 days with him in Alexandria, discontinued throughout a whole year: 2-3 days per season, during key months such as October, January, May and August. This way, the documentary can truly explore the agricultural processes depending on the season, placing emphasis on Nature's role (like a character of its own) and Sebastian's adaptability, expertise and knowledge in his work, farm and fields. This idea of "cycle" is the core structure for the film's storytelling. It will establish a clear and poetic timeline, and avoid redundancy, to be better enjoyed by the audience.

Even if we have secured a part of the budget thanks to our wonderful sponsors (see below), we still need YOUR HELP to cover production costs, funds for the crew, logistical expenses, as well as marketing and distribution fees. Thanks to YOUR contribution, this documentary will be able to:
- show cinematic quality both in form and content,
- reach its target audience,
- raise awareness about local agricultural systems,
- propel the artists and the crew members higher in their beloved film industry.
We also aim to promote the shooting location, the town of Alexandria, Ontario, and the Glengarry County: they're truly worth the stay!

In order to do that, our initial goal of $5,000 CAD will contribute to get enough resources to finalize this 30-minute-long documentary and support the talent and community involved. To complete our budget, we then aim to apply for grants by several arts councils or other funding organizations.

We are offering some great perks for your contribution, so please don't forget to check the Rewards section! Any amount is a great help to us, but whether or not you can contribute financially, please support us by sharing this Crowdfundr campaign across your social media channels!

Martha Lenoir - Director

Photo: Mathieu Taillardas

Marthe (or Martha) Lenoir is a French-born Media Artist raised in France then Ottawa. She studied film at the EICAR International Film School in Lyon (France) then worked in video production for two years, screenwriting and directing corporate videos. She also worked freelance as a Script Supervisor on many narrative short films, and as a Director on several music videos and a mockumentary; writing and filming most of her own work.

Now established in Tkaronto (Toronto), Martha joined Le Labo Media Arts Centre for French-speaking artists and is getting her foot in the door in the performing arts (stage managing, translating, production assisting). But with each passing day, Martha's personal strife for the protection of the environment is growing stronger, and she seeks to use Power Dam Road as an ode to local farming, and slower life modes of the Canadian countryside. With new roots growing in Alexandria and a deepening admiration for Sebastian -- the main "character" of the film --, the Director wishes to breathe that same, new-found connection and love for nature and for our elders to the audience. On the long-term, Martha intends to direct feature films and, more specifically, musicals for the screen.
Fun fact! On the side, Martha is a prolific surrealist painter: obsessed with zero-wasting, raccoon-like she hoards materials left on the street and upcycles them in the name of Art.

Camila Padilla - Producer

Camila was born and raised in Colombia, then studied Audiovisual Communication at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Cali. Through her career, she has developed multiple sales and negotiation skills, working as a Business Development Manager for NGOs and advertising companies. She has been a producer on short films in Colombia and Peru, plus she loves to participate as a volunteer across different Film Festivals.

Established in Toronto, Camila still focuses on business development, but on the side she supports documentaries as a producer, coordinating fundraising strategies and sponsorships. Power Dam Road is an important project for her because her great-grandfather was a farmer and she was visiting him constantly, getting familiar with life at the farm and appreciating the connection with nature and the countryside.

Fun fact! Camila started theatre acting for plays at five years old, developing a profound passion for the arts. The favorite character she has played is Titania in A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Camila Padilla – Productrice

Mary Jane Schummer is a Toronto-based multidisciplinary artist, illustrator and Modernist musician. She began learning music at age 10, and participated in Royal Conservatory examinations, later graduating from OCAD U's illustration program in 2019.

Influenced by the raw recordings of low-fi home studios, and the honesty that can exist in a fleeting moment, Mary Jane captures spaces and people in a vulnerable, and giving state. Her influences vary from the intimacy of Elliott Smith, to the bombastic movements of Oingo Boingo - the connective tissue being the excitement of hearing a unique creative voice refine itself. She expects honesty and truth from her work, and her creative growth. New creative experiences and perspectives are always around the corner.

She recently published the music collection, 𝘊𝘰𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘴 (2024).
