A short film shot 90% underwater, revealing the silent disappearance of marine life in Costa Rica.
My name is Isabel, and for years I’ve spent more time underwater than above it. As a dive instructor in Guanacaste, the Catalina Islands are my home. Every day I would descend and find the same octopus who seemed to recognize me, curiously emerging from its hiding place. Until one day I arrived… and it was gone. It had been taken.
What once felt like an anecdote has become an alarm: species are disappearing before our eyes. Despite being an area of high ecological value and in the process of becoming a Marine Protected Area, illegal fishing, bycatch from nets and longlines, pollution from waste, and the constant noise of boats are emptying these world-renowned dive sites.
Giant manta rays, octopuses, reef sharks, and rays that were once daily encounters are now increasingly rare. And almost no one notices, because only those of us underwater can see it.
This is not just another ocean documentary. It is a testimony from within.
With my partner Iván behind the camera, marine biologist César bringing scientific insight, and Captain Rudy offering the perspective of someone who has lived his entire life at sea, we are creating a short film shot 80% underwater so that you too can encounter these disappearing species.
We want the Catalinas to become a global example of what is happening across the world’s oceans: even in the most protected and touristic places, marine life is quietly fading away.
This short film is not the end—it is the beginning of a conversation that must reach divers, tourists, authorities, and communities. Because once you truly witness the loss… you can no longer pretend it isn’t happening.
We need US$24,000 to complete the film and bring it to as many people as possible, so the reality of what’s happening becomes known. Every dollar goes directly to underwater filming, editing, and distribution.

Las Voces de las Catalinas
Un cortometraje 90% filmado bajo el agua que revela la desaparición silenciosa de la vida marina en Costa Rica.
Me llamo Isabel y desde hace años paso más tiempo bajo el agua que fuera de ella. Como instructora de buceo en Guanacaste, las Islas Catalinas son mi hogar. Cada día bajaba y encontraba al mismo pulpo que me reconocía, que salía a curiosear. Hasta que un día llegué… y ya no estaba. Se lo habían llevado.
Lo que parecía una anécdota se ha convertido en una alarma: las especies están desapareciendo frente a nuestros ojos . A pesar de ser un área de alto valor ecológico y en proceso de convertirse en Área Marina Protegida, la pesca ilegal, la captura incidental en redes y palangres, la contaminación de basura y el ruido constante de embarcaciones están vaciando estos sitios de buceo mundialmente famosos.
Mantarrayas gigantes, pulpos, tiburones de arrecife y rayas que antes eran encuentros diarios… ahora son cada vez más raros. Y casi nadie lo nota, porque solo quienes estamos bajo el agua lo vemos.
Este no es un documental más sobre el océano. Es el testimonio desde dentro.
Con mi pareja Iván detrás de la cámara, el biólogo marino César aportando la ciencia y el capitán Rudy con su mirada de quien ha vivido el mar toda la vida, estamos creando un cortometraje 80% filmado bajo el agua para que tú también puedas conocer a todos estos animales que están desapareciendo .
Queremos que Las Catalinas se convierta en el ejemplo global de lo que está pasando en todos los océanos: incluso en los lugares más protegidos y turísticos, la vida marina se apaga en silencio.
Este cortometraje no es el final. Es el comienzo de una conversación que debe llegar a buceadores, turistas, autoridades y comunidades. Porque cuando realmente ves la pérdida… ya no puedes fingir que no está pasando.
Necesitamos US$24,000 para terminar la película y llevarla a cuanta gente podamos y que así se sepa lo que está pasando. Cada dólar va directamente a filmación submarina, edición y distribución.
