My Journey to this Book:
According to the MGH Center for Women's Mental Health, postpartum mood disturbances affect approximately 85% of women and 10 to 15% experience more severe outcomes like depression, anxiety, and psychosis.
I was one of the 10 to 15%.
But the toll my postpartum anxiety had on my family was much more pronounced after the birth of my second child. Unlike the first time around, when I could shut myself up with my baby in my room and no one else needed me, my second bout of postpartum anxiety brought with it a vibrant, imaginative, and loving 5 year old who still needed play dates, activities, and well... a present mother. The result--my anxiety was at its absolute worst.
In many ways, My Mom is a Dragon is my atonement for that time. A way of telling my oldest that I see what I put her through and that I can only seek to help others after me.
My Mom is a Dragon:
Sir Charles is a knight determined to protect the Realm from all who seek to destroy it. Sadly, he has evidence to suggest the Queen is turning into a DRAGON! After all, since welcoming a new baby princess, the Queen has slept at odd hours, refused to leave her lair, started breathing fire, and hoarded the baby like treasure. With the help of the King, Sir Charles learns that this is part of the magic of queens and that one day she will return to her old self.
Designed to help families navigate Postpartum Mood Disorders, this upcoming book hopes to help older siblings make sense of the changes their mothers are facing after having a baby.

The plain fact is that the cost to self-publish or publish with a hybrid publisher is costly. Children’s author Sara H. Fowler knew from an early age that she would one day be a storyteller. As she became immersed in the world of picture books after having her own children, she was inspired by their imaginations which, in turn, led to story ideas. Her next endeavor, My Mom is a Dragon is inspired by her postpartum period after having her second child .
Sara enjoys using fantasy tropes to explain reality to children. In blending common family experiences, like the birth of another child, with fantastical elements, she hopes to foster a love of imagination in young children that stays with them long after the book is closed. And for parents, her goal is to provide conversation starters for those frustrating dilemmas of parenthood.
A majority of Sara’s life has been dedicated in various ways to supporting children, parents, and reading. As a secondary ELA teacher for seven years, she often used picture books and children’s poetry to teach literary concepts to high schoolers, including extended metaphor, allusion, and symbolism—figures of speech later prevalent in her own picture book. She recently ended her tenure as the president of a local MOMS Club (Moms Offering Moms Support), a role which had her supporting stay-at-home parents, organizing guest speakers on parent and family-related issues, and participating in community service including fundraising for children facing serious medical challenges.
When she isn’t writing inventive stories for families to enjoy together, Sara likes traveling, reading, playing Dungeons and Dragons, and spending time with her family. She lives with her husband and their two children, a five-year-old daughter and one-year-old son, along with their dog, Duchess, in Georgia. My Mom is a Dragon is her second children's book .
