Greek for beauty, Kalos is a fully immersive, walk-thru kaleidoscopic being created by The Woodbutchers' Collective for Burning Man this year. Celebrating the invitation for playfulness and creativity evoked by this year's theme, Curiouser & Curiouser, Kalos inspires your imagination and curiosity. As you walk into and through the mirrored interior, where shifting and ever-colliding prisms refract images and colors, you'll see yourself reflected in new and beautiful ways.
Kalos is both simple and complex: 40 feet long and 10 feet high, the interior of the kaleidoscope will spark reflection on your inner world, while the exterior shimmers with the beauty of the external: the Playa, the sunrise, the dust, and all the colorful burners, bikes, and art cars moving around, distorted by a rippling wind sculpture.
Who We Are
The Woodbutchers'
Collective is based in Sonoma County (California) and includes
artists and builders: Peter "Pedro" Loughran, David
"Scribble" Nelson-Gal, Jules Nelson-Gal, Sharyl “Sunny”
McGrew, and a team of wonderful friends and supporters. Members of
the Collective have worked on many previous Burning Man art
projects, including:
--The Doorway to Everything (2023)
--Unbound (2022)--a spectacular library of collaged books the
size of a house
--The Stairway to Nothing (2021)
--Several of the temples
We are truly excited to create something so visual and immersive, and invite you to join us in funding and building Kalos for Burning Man this year.
Your Support
A surprising amount of effort and money goes into bringing big artworks to life. We are seeking your support to raise $10,000 to cover the costs of building and transporting Kalos to the Playa. Every little bit helps. Your contribution will cover the cost of materials (plywood, mirrored plexiglass, paint, lighting, hardware, and many miscellaneous other materials) and transportation (renting a truck, a trailer, and paying a driver).
