Logline
On Halloween, a group of friends play a party game from the 80's. What they don’t know is that they are playing along with a dark unknown evil that seeks to win.
(Don't forget to look at the incentives down below!)
Lore
On Halloween, we all play spooky games and do things that are out of the ordinary. We dress up, pretend to be someone we aren’t, or maybe we pretend to be someone that we actually are. We stick our hands in a bowl and guess what it is, bob for apples, and watch horror movies. We scare each other and let strangers give us candy. The list goes on, but the point is, is that we do funky things on Halloween, so playing some game that your Uncle gives you isn’t weird right? Problem is…maybe you don’t know what you’re getting into. “Witch Box,” is a story about friends on Halloween playing an 80’s party game called “Mafia.” Well, a version of the game. The girls pick their cards, find out their roles, and go about their night. Someone is waiting to be “killed” right? But this game could get twisted fast. And with a dark unknown evil playing along with them, maybe they should have chosen a different game.
Concept Story
I don’t know if any of you grew up playing the game “Mafia,” but I had some weird funky experiences playing it when I was in middle school. There are many different versions of the game, but usually “Mafia” is played with two groups, mafia members and townspeople. The townspeople try to figure out who the mafia members are and eliminate them before the mafia members “kill” them off. Sometimes there are other roles like a medic or a sheriff, but no matter what version I played, I ended up losing, laughing, and one time even kneeling on a tack and bleeding in the dark. So, I’ve decided to write my take on a horror version of the game.
Why Horror?
Why horror you ask? I love slasher horror. But that’s too simple of an answer. I love writing horror because it’s psychological and I love having my characters overcome trauma. While getting stabbed and losing friends is on the high spectrum of trauma, it’s trauma that can physically and mentally be overcome. Whether it’s the final girl pulling herself together and gaining the confidence to face the killer or acknowledging that what she’s going through is real and that she has people around her that will help her through anything is what I love watching characters work through. Writing strong female characters is a big thing for me. Writing the “final girl” arc has always been something that I wanted to do. I’ve spent the last few years watching movie after movie, being inspired by all these strong female leads and I want to continue to see those roles end up on the big screen. For Witch Box though, I wanted to add an element that I’ve never played with before…supernatural. And the question you should be asking is…who survives?
