My name is Shirley (she/her) and I'm a Black and Korean full-time independent artist based in Central California with my German Shepherd dog Eden. I'm also the artist who started the enamel pin Kickstarter craze!   I've now done (and successfully fulfilled) 22 crowdfunding campaigns. Wild West Heart is a love letter to my Korean heritage, and a way for me to connect to my past while sharing my unique perspective as a Black/Korean woman who grew up in the American West.

My Black heritage is just as important to me and cannot be separated from my whole person, and so some Black American influences and symbolism can be found within some of the cards.

Each page within the zine will feature one of twenty-nine tarot inspired illustrations, the meaning behind each card, and how growing up as a mixed race child in the American West continues to inspire the work I create.

Per the creator, Maysia was "...an art event [in 2021] by and for Asian artists, to celebrate our cultures through any medium we choose."

My approach for the drawing prompts was less about what the drawing prompt of the day could mean in a cultural consensus kind of way ie what you would find when you research Korean culture, but more about what they mean to me personally with my own life experiences as a Black/Korean girl growing up in the American West.

WILD WEST HEART is going to be a 60 paged 5x8 perfect bound, 3 coloured risograph zine that consists of my tarot inspired illustrations I created for the Maysia art event.

For this campaign, I also wanted to create a limited edition 8x11 risograph print of one of the illustrations featured in Wild West Heart.

I've chosen to use Crowdfundr because I made the choice to no longer use or support Kickstarter due to their decision to move forward with blockchain integration.

This was not an easy choice because I relied so heavily on Kickstarter to bring life to my many projects. It's scary and risky, but I have high hopes for Crowdfundr, and I want to show myself that I do not have to use such a harmful platform for my creative endeavours.
