"የት: Where?" Phase 2
Synopsis
የት፧ (Where?) is a story about finding meaning in remembering. A daughter recalls a beach trip with her late mother who opens up about how to carry on among their shared painful circumstances. Through vulnerability and honesty, it tackles grief, healing, and cultural responsibility.
The Mind Behind The Story
Lidya Dereje, writer/director of Where?, is the daughter
of two Ethiopian immigrants. Her curiosity with photography was first
sparked as a child while visiting her place of origin, but she later
rediscovered it in her studies as a young adult. She never considered
herself a writer, but found that life has an interesting way of
evolving you. A year ago, a family member of hers passed away
suddenly. Amidst grieving, she wrote a script confronting the
conversations she never got to have because she thought that there
would be more time. WARNING: you’re never promised any, and the time
should always be now!
Being raised in an environment with multicultural and generational
understanding, she has developed the ability to flexibly,
empathetically, and creatively view and portray the world and its
people. She strives to make a film that reflects the complexities of
our emotions from life experiences. In doing so, she wants to honor
the act of feeling. That is what reminds us of our humanity;
something the world we live in often strives to take away from us.
What We Need + How You Benefit
The producers aim to raise $1,500 (the amount not yet raised) out
of the $3,500 total goal for production of this short film. If you
decide to donate, your funds will go to the following:
- Location permits
- Equipment rentals (camera, lenses, lighting, sound, etc.)
- Costuming and props
- Travel and meals for cast and crew
- Working wages for cast and crew
- Submission fees for distribution (film festivals, platform hosting, etc.)
The more you donate, the more you get! Certain donation amounts
will result in perks such as:
- Exclusive access to screening the final cut of the film
- A shoutout in the credits of the film
- An executive producer credit in the film

How Your Contribution Helps Us
When you donate to this campaign, you'll be aiding in the careers
of young Black filmmakers making their way in the entertainment
industry. The story of our film is grounded in the organic
experiences of many communities; Black women, the children of
immigrants, and East Africans will be able to see themselves both on
and behind the screen. The world needs more stories centered on
women, the Black diaspora, and the immigrant experience. Donating to
this campaign will help to create a space for these voices and start
necessary conversations within the communities through which it
focuses. The producers of this project have the necessary experience
and passion to make this film great -- we just need your help to do it.
