“Write a hook. One to fight over.”
WHAT'S THE PROJECT?
I’m Russell Bradley Fenton, actor, screenwriter, and director, also co-founder of Electric Radiance Pictures. I’m here to kick off a crowdfunding campaign for a very special project that I’m also producing, a short TV pilot thriller set in Hollywood, titled Scenario.
WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
It’s about this down and out screenwriter who has had one bad break after the next, struggling to make ends meet. One night, he finds this anonymous script in the backseat of his car while working his side hustle job as a ride share driver. The script details a series of murders committed by this mysterious serial killer. And the victims are all high powered movie mogul types accused of sexual misconduct and other unprofessional acts within the studio system. The writer, of course, decides to claim the script as his own, submitting it to his literary rep and lawyer, hoping to score big with this opportunity. But he finds out very quickly that the script is real...and unfolding in real time. It’s Based on a True Story meets Entourage.
WHAT'S IT REALLY ABOUT?
Scenario blends the 'what-if' thriller with Hollywood satire, but it’s more than that. It’s about chasing fame and the consequences that go along with that. It’s about the limits you’ll break to get what you want, risking your values and friendships along the way. It’s also a reflection of the writer’s process, where it all starts with the script before any film or TV show ever gets greenlit. Finally, it’s about looking over your shoulder, wondering if your questionable past will ever catch up to you. And if it ever does, then #TimesUp, you're canceled.
WHY THIS STORY?
I felt compelled to tell this story when the Weinstein scandal broke. I was floored by the media response and the sudden, overnight attitude that developed. I think a lot of artists, especially actors like myself, can relate to those uncomfortable moments that I’m positive most of us have experienced when working in the entertainment industry. From those shady audition locations to offhand remarks made by powerful people who can seriously offend you, take advantage of you professionally, physically, emotionally, and at the same time, act as if their behavior is completely normal and acceptable. It felt very scary to be a guy, let alone someone who worked in Hollywood. That fear spawned the idea of: what-if some boogeyman suddenly started bumping off these rich, untouchable movie moguls who were being exposed in the media as sexual predators?
WHY NOW?
Since then (especially in light of the latest P. Diddy scandal), this story has developed into so much more as Cancel Culture has become predominant in our society. With mainstream media continually touting the release of the Epstein flight logs, as well as the growing number of outspoken critics of the Hollywood studio system, I had to find a way to tell this story that was both personal to me and universal for audiences.
On the flip side of this, the idea of the public embracing this sort of “society’s revenge” against these high powered movie moguls is also pretty disturbing. This out-for-blood culture seems indicative of the darkness in all of us, where we take pleasure in watching the downfall of these types of people, yet we don’t want to admit that this sick way of justice is satisfying and fulfilling. I think the fact that so many serial killer documentaries on streaming networks rank in trending programs to watch is also evidence that audiences like to know what makes these certain people tick.
OUR TEAM
As creator and primary writer, I've already started a production team to help make this campaign possible. My wife and business partner, Alexandra Berardi, who is also an actor, will be producing this project, and our good friend, actor, screenwriter, and director, Rachel Chelsea Foster, helped us to write and develop the complete 10 episode series.
OUR GOALS
Our goals for the project are this: the pilot will serve as a proof of concept for the show, showcasing the themes, style, and tone along with the major players introduced. We'll submit it to specific film festivals and look for an interested distributor with a second goal to distribute it ourselves through aggregate service websites like FilmHub, in order to possibly share the pilot and eventual series to an AVOD streaming platform audience.
With our campaign goal to reach $35,000, we will allocate the funds for securing locations, hiring our film crew and department heads (Director of Photography, Gaffer, Grip, AD, UPM, etc), and cover rental costs for camera and lighting equipment. Also for paying and feeding our talent and crew.
Our locations for the shoot will be based in the greater Sarasota, Florida area as a stand in for LA, where the story of course takes place.
WHAT ARE THE INCENTIVES?
So what's in it for you after helping us produce this amazing TV pilot?
For starters, we have a wide selection of perks and benefits to offer!
Most importantly, we want our supporters to be actively involved in promoting this project, increasing awareness on social media platforms, and helping us maximize our chances to secure the best possible budget for this production shoot.
With your support, any donation is greatly appreciated and incredibly supportive to the independent filmmaking community as well as local filmmakers in Florida. There's no better time to make movies outside of Hollywood, and we aim to create a thriller for the ages: one that is spellbinding, memorable, and most of all primal.
