RIP Jennell Jaquays

This fundraiser is a memorial for the legendary game designer and Queer activist Jennell Jaquays. Jennell's work was fundamental in shaping early tabletop roleplaying games and how we all assemble maps and dungeons.​​

She also left a major mark on the video game industry working as Director of Game Design for Coleco, as a level designer for id Software, Ensemble Studios, and CCP Games. She was also one of the co-founders of the video game education program, The Guildhall at SMU.

As a Queer activist, she worked as creative director for the Transgender Human Rights Institute in Seattle was involved in the petition to create "Leelah's Law," outlawing conversion therapy of LGBT youth.

She will be sorely missed as a mentor and role model for countless people.

Return to Perinthos Book

The goal of this fundraiser is fund the printing of Return to Perinthos, a megadungeon a la Caverns of Thracia. It will be a U.S. letter-sized approximately 200-page wirebound book. You will be able to plop over 80 dungeon tiles and keys right onto your gaming table.

The content for the book was created by the Jennell Jaquays Memorial Game Jam. It has been a community effort, and we are still looking for volunteers to help with production of the book. If you are interested in donating writing, illustrations, editing, or layout instead of making a monetary contribution, you can volunteer using the instructions on the Return to Perinthos Volunteer Site. Volunteers will be able to purchase a copy of the book  for only the cost of printing once we have received physical copies.

As part of this community effort, Luke Gearing, has graciously agreed to write a setting that ties all of the disparate dungeon tiles together. The book will also feature an unpublished Q&A with Jennell Jaquays that was donated by Tavis Allison with permission from Goodman Games.

Licensing

This work is licensed under Creative Commons   Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International. This version of Creative Commons allows folks to share and remix materials from the book for non-commercial use, it belongs to the community. This only applies to the edited and assembled version of the book. Contributors retain all ownership for their submissions to the game jam, so they can use their entries in their own commercial products if they choose to do so.

Where's the Money Going

All profits (money raised-printing costs) from this campaign will be donated to Jennell Jaquays's family to assist with medical and funeral expenses.

At our minimum funding level of $500, we will be able to produce 10 books at a price of $35 each. This means that $350 will go towards printing, and $150 will be donated.

If we reach a funding level of $2,500, we will be able to produce 50 books at a price of $25 each. This means that $1,250 would go towards printing, and $1,250 would be donated.

Timeline

This is a rather tight timeline, but we want to get this book out quickly in order to honor Jennell's memory now rather than many months in the future. We have volunteers working diligently, and you can visit the Return to Perinthos Volunteer Site if you would like to donate writing, editing, illustration, or layout to the project. Volunteers will be able to purchase a copy of the book for only the cost of printing once we have received physical copies.

We will keep the campaign open, and you can back to receive a book all the way until we start physical production. We will be sending whatever money is available to Jennell Jaquays family immediately after the two week deadline we have posted on this campaign, and then we will send another donation once we close the campaign to orders.

We will be able to offer this book worldwide by using RV Games infrastructure for crowdfunding fulfillment.

Printing

Printing will be by Mixam. It will be a wire bound book on high quality paper with a laminated cover. Books will be individually shrink-wrapped to prevent damage to the wire binding during shipping.
