What is Meandering Realms?

Meandering Realms is an anthology of comics made from unconventional materials.

It is over 100 pages of full-color crafted comics from 16 different creators.

The comics feature a wide variety of materials from embroidery, to cut paper, clay, wood cutouts, needlefelting, face-paint and beyond.

Each artist took an individual and unique approach to their comics making process, resulting in works that look as if they came from another realm.  This anthology is for any one who loves comics, crafts, or weird fun art of any kind!

Our list of contributors:
Filipa Estrela, Katie Longua, Sean Marney, Erin Partridge, Sage Clemmons, Paper Melon, Nick Stellanova, Kriota Willberg, Bread Tarleton, Allison Bannister, Bryn Ziegler, Issy Manley, Roshan Ganu, Nick Steinborn, Keren Katz, and DT Burns

This project is being edited and organized by me, Filipa Estrela, with the lovely support of my contributors Bread Tarleton and Allison Bannister.

Why Unconventional Material Comics?

For as long as I have been drawing and making comics I have also been crafting, sewing, and generally seeking new art forms to learn and play with. When I began studying at the Center for Cartoon Studies I started to get the urge to combine both comics-making and craft making. The first experimental/crafted comics I made were a needlefelted mini-comic and a cut-paper mini-comic, both were well-received by my peers which made me really excited to try more forms! I began to look at the work of other cartoonists who make comics beyond pen and paper and engaging with folks in conversation about what I'd dubbed "unconventional material" comics.

The more of these comics I encountered the more I felt seen as a creator. Comics are hours and hours of work and working with unconventional material only adds to and complicates an already labor-intensive process. Unconventional Material comics are multi-disciplinary works of love and the more I spent time making them myself during my thesis year at CCS, the more I wanted to celebrate them and encourage other folks to experiment and make their own!

I announced my call for Meandering Realms after giving a talk on Unconventional Material comics for LadiesCon in 2020, and I received dozens responses, more than I ever expected, from folks of all sorts of backgrounds and experience. Some were experienced in comics, some experienced in a specific craft, some in both and some in neither! But all shared enthusiasm for something I love deeply.

My goals in putting together Meandering Realms were to bring together anyone who has any interest in making, reading, or crafting, these kinds of comics and to celebrate some amazing beautiful trailblazing comics.

Ultimately I hope this anthology inspires you to make comics, unconventional or not, or at the very least to take a look at things in your own life that you love and consider ways to bring them together in new and joy-sparking ways.

Breakdown of funds:

Money crowdfunded goes to printing/production costs and to further pay contributors.

Thanks to a sponsor I was able to pay all Meandering Realms contributors $15 a page to start but comics are hard-work and deserve pay that reflects that! I want to up the pay for contributors by at least an additional $50 a page if I can.

This makes our major goal for this campaign to raise 16k which is enough to fund a 500 book soft-cover run of Meandering Realms as well as an additional $50 per page pay for all contributors.

However, as we are doing a keep-it-all campaign, we have a few different possible plans depending on how much in funds we are able to reach!

5k and under:
No matter what, these books are getting made!
Ordered books will be printed and hand-assembled by me, Filipa, at the Queer Archive Work and Binch Press Studio.
At the studio I have access to all the tools I need to make these books on a small scale-- a color laser printer, a guillotine paper cutter, and perfect binding machine, all of which I have experience using for my own self-publishing projects and assisting in studio projects.  Funds will go to paying for production costs first and any leftover funds will be split between contributors.

5k-15k:
At this point we are likely looking at a run of 200+ soft-cover books.
The books which will be sent off to a US based digital printer for production.
Again, funds will go to paying for production costs first and any leftover funds will be split between contributors, which will start getting close to an additional $25-50 a page pay for all contributors!

16k:
We reach our goal!
500 books will be sent to an US based off-set printer and each contributor will receive an additional $50 per page for their work!
All will be going according to plan! Wow!

Over 16k stretch goals:
Depending on how much over 16k we go we will be able to upgrade the book in fancy-ness and be able to provide bonus payment for contributors. Some example goals:

At 20k, we can add a spot-foil treatment to the book covers!
At 25K, we can have those spot-foil books and a $200 bonus for all contributors.
At 30K, we can upgrade to hardcover books with foil treatments!

If we go above our goal we may also consider additional goodies-- like bookmarks, stickers, etc-- for you the supporters, but the priority will be production costs and artists bonuses.  Any add-ons will be carefully considered to be sure they are achievable and will not create expenses we couldn't cover.
