Hello, Norah Green (Writer/Director) & Sam Goldberg (Producer) here!
Magpies is a thesis short-film, written and directed by Norah Green. This film follows a tight-knit troupe of mimes all living under the same roof. When tragedy strikes, the group must confront the fragility of their bond and the unstoppable force of change.
If you invest in this film, you will see results sooner than later! We aim to finish a rough cut by May 12th! We have set a modest goal and hope to complete this film as cost-effective as possible. We decided to crowdfund because we believe in the power of community to make art come to life. Don't feel obligated to donate a ton of money, but anything would help - we couldn't do this without you!
Along with your donation, you will receive bonus rewards at each tier. At the highest tier, you could even have your name in the credits as an Executive Producer! Smaller tiers include earlier access to BTS On Set photos, updates on our continued progress, some exclusive interviews with the crew, and more!

Hi!! I’m Norah and I am in my last semester at SFSU, working on
my senior thesis film. My film is an unconventional, sitcom-inspired
drama, centered around a close-knit troupe of mimes. The imperfect
group of characters and their passionate bond drives the story. The
sincerity and care they display in their private lives juxtaposes
the lightheartedness of miming as an art form. It examines what it
means to play house, as well as themes of change and grief, and
undermines the type of characterization we project onto a usually
silent mime.
I am drawn to stories that use fantastical and peculiar elements
to unearth the truth of an emotion or experience and that is what I
aim to do with this film. The visual storytelling combines several
niches that over my time in university, I have discovered a love
for. I obviously adore mimes both aesthetically and thematically,
but the world my specific mimes live in takes inspiration from both
circus and burlesque. Last semester while abroad at UEA I got
involved in the burlesque community and that experience has inspired
the production design and tone of the film. All of these artforms
are quite scrappy and DIY, while being expressive, vulnerable and
tongue-in-cheek all at the same time. This scrappy yet sincere
feeling is what I hope to convey through the film, because in many
ways that is also what the process of filmmaking is.
I have discovered a deep reverence for this process and how
inventive and creative in problem solving it forces you to be. Since
I started at SF State, I’ve been working on lots of films in
different capacities, both in and out of class and for the film
society DKA, but this is the longest, most involved project I’ve
been able to direct myself. This opportunity means a lot to me,
because since my freshman year I’ve been looking forward to making
my thesis film, especially now that I feel like I have an
interesting story to tell. I am incredibly grateful for any support
in helping this film come to life, whether it’s a donation or a
share, no contribution is too small and anything helps!
