Dear community, kin, and beloveds, I am asking you all for support to call in new creative work. For the first time in my life, I've been offered a Solo Show at a major gallery, Santa Fe’s Form and Concept. This is a HUGE DEAL. I am so proud and humbled to have this opportunity. I have been hoping to show with this venue for 5 years. Now I need the space and time to complete the work for the show, which opens in September. I need to create an additional 10 paintings, plus an installation, a poetry performance, and a collective ritual.
As the primary breadwinner in my family for the last two years, and as a queer parent, I've been spread thin. Before the pandemic, I was planning to reduce my trauma counseling caseload and shift towards being a more full-time artist. Instead all my shows and events were canceled, my wife became underemployed and had a series of health crises, and I took on more clients. I have managed to carve out small windows of time to continue my art and writing practices, which feels like a real triumph given the circumstances, but now I am hoping for some committed time in my studio and an emotional and spiritual break from juggling so much. I'm exhausted.
I've dreamed up new poetry and new paintings - all waiting to come to life. I'm seeking your support to hold back the world's hustle and grind for 2-3 months. Call it a stay-at-home residency. Your contributions will help pay our life expenses: our bills, our mortgage, the expenses of raising a kiddo. Your contributions will also pay for the materials to make the work, including: paint, brushes, ink, wood and hardware. A small portion will go towards chiropractic care and bodywork for the chornic migraines that have been plaguing me and keeping me out of the studio. Lastly, donations will help offset the costs associated with this fundraiser, including credit card fees, taxes, and perks/rewards for donors.
I want to recognize the ways I have access. I am partnered, white, a home owner, and I've had access to higher education. My in-laws are financially supportive. I know that without these benefits I may not have come as far as I have. But I am also the neurodivergent parent of a high needs three year old, and my wife continues to contend with disabling health challenges. Our family has been struggling. If I keep working full time, I won't be able to give this project the attention it deserves. So I'm turning to you, my community, to make this work possible.
About the Exhibition:
Ancestral Imagination, held at Form & Concept Gallery in Santa Fe, NM, is a personal reimagining of the seasonal relationships and pre-Christian spiritual practices common to European ancestors whose descendants have migrated into the indigenous territories and high desert landscapes of New Mexico. The exhibition will showcase new paintings, an installation, an artist talk, a poetry performance, and a collective ritual. The show will be on view from September 17 - November 25, 2022, with an official opening on September 30 and an artist talk on October 1st.
