Goodnight
A short film about cycles of paid care, freedom and play, and the journey from childhood to death.
AN EXCITING UPDATE!
To our families, friends, and supporters:
One year ago, you generously supported us in our dream of making our little film. AND THEN we made it! AND THEN Goodnight got into the Sundance Film Festival !! Wowww!! Out of over 11,000 short films, 60 were chosen to screen at the festival this year, and we are so honored to be one of them. Sundance is the premiere place for independent films and filmmakers, and we can’t wait to go to Park City in January with our movie. Sundance has been the launching ground for many filmmakers, and having our film in the festival opens the door to many opportunities for the next steps in our career (making more movies.)
We are so grateful to each of you for your help in seeing this project through. Creating a film is a labor of love and you made that possible.
ANOTHER ASK
We’re gearing up for what we hope will be a busy year of festivals, where we can continue to meet potential creative partners and funders for future projects, including our feature currently in development. However, the cost of attending these festivals, including application fees, travel and lodging, falls to us.
In light of these (wonderful!) developments, we have decided to reopen our Crowdfunding page. We would be so honored to have your continued support, whether that’s another donation or forwarding to someone who you think might be excited by supporting independent artists and this film.
HOW TO WATCH
If you’d like to watch the film online at Sundance, there’s more info about how to buy an online pass here ! If your support included a screening link “perk” previously, that’s coming your way soon. We would love to share any upcoming screenings in your area as they come up, and hopefully you can join us in watching Goodnight on the big screen.
BEHIND THE SCENES
SYNOPSIS
A hospice nurse revisits the comfort and fear of childhood when she hires a babysitter to take care of her for the night.
Hospice nurse Daria hires Max, her children’s babysitter, to babysit her for the night—to feed her, bathe her, play games with her, and put her to sleep, as if she were a child.
As Daria navigates the experience of receiving this kind of care as an adult, Max attempts to balance the boundaries and emotional demands of being paid to provide it. Throughout the evening, they work to build an intimate and vulnerable connection within the confines of this specific relationship.
DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
Goodnight , examines what happens when we grow up and forget how to play. What came so naturally to us as children becomes increasingly difficult as we become the caretakers.
The nostalgic pull of childhood tells us there was a time when someone else kept us safe, structured our time, kissed our faces, and when play could exist without fear.
Can we access this freedom as adults? If yes, how? Is anything irretrievably lost, is anything gained?
This story explores what it’s like to remember how to play when we’ve forgotten how to, and how to give of ourselves generously even when we don’t feel like it.
At different points throughout our lives, we all find ourselves both in the position of a caretaker, and in positions that require care. This film looks at what that exchange can cost us, and what we stand to gain from it – financially and emotionally.
