Far Distant is the latest comic by artist A Liang Chan, whose previous publications include: Interim (ShortBox, 2020), Viscera (ShortBox Comics Fair, 2021), and Everything You Will Forget (ShortBox Comics Fair, 2022). Far Distant follows a researcher all on their own in a remote region as their dreams become stranger and stranger, slowly creating a sublime dissonance and ambivalence illustrated in methodical paneling and uncanny, symbolic artwork.
While completing their second cycle conducting research in isolation, this Keeper contemplates an anomalous transmission that describes something unknown, until their dreams begin to change and soon, a choice must be made: repeat the same cycle over and over or transform. When alone with your thoughts, what would you do when your dreams start talking to you?

A Liang Chan is a carbon-based lifeform who does illustration, comics, and concept art, exists in “NYC,” and can be found as “formyths” online. They like stories that feel close to the kinds of emotions you experience when you’ve stayed up a little too late. Their current life goal is to befriend a flock of crows.

Bulgilhan Press is an independent small press comics publisher based in Somerville, MA, founded & operated by Zach Clemente. We're dedicated to publishing new and self-indulgent comics, aiming to connect exciting & artistically motivated works and their creators with a curious & supportive audience. We started publishing in 2021 and have since published four comics by wonderful artists. Three of our comics are available for purchase as add-ons for this campaign.
Zach Clemente has been in and around the indie comics scene for nearly a decade. From 2015 to 2022, he worked on the Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo (MICE) on the organizational committee and recently joined the Boston Comic Arts Foundation 501(c)(3) non-profit organization as the President & Chair of the board.
The
goal is set to cover printing expenses for
Far Distant, fulfillment costs, payment
processing fees, and expected taxes. The artist has been paid an
initial fee for their work and all proceeds generated by sales of
their book after this campaign will be split evenly between the artist
and Bulgilhan.
The funds that go to Bulgilhan will be used for to help it become a more sustainable business. Specifically, it will go to things like: initial payments to artists for future publications, recurring business fees such as website and storefront subscriptions, LLC renewal fees, expenses related to exhibiting at festivals, and continued printing of current titles.
We
successfully published our first two books, Faster by Jesse
Lonergan & Threshold by Anke Gladnick using Kickstarter
in 2021 and feel confident in our ability to properly deliver
Far Distant to our audience with Crowdfundr.
- The entirely of the comic artwork has been completed and we are currently in the proofing stage of print production.
- We print domestically to ensure that we're receiving the print quality that we're looking for at the expected time-frame provided by the printers we work with.
- We've been working with White Squirrel to manage all our fulfillment since we started publishing comics and have found their services to be very reliable. Our books are in very good hands in their warehouse in Everett, WA.
While we plan to start fulfilling the books in the summer, the major risk is the possibility of that timeline slipping due to our printer's availability. We have complete trust in them and their process but as they set their printing timeline, projects may get moved around a bit. If any issues related to printing or any aspect of the campaign come up, that will be communicated in a timely and transparent fashion.
