‘Democracy at Stake’ will be installed along the path of the BRC Ultramarathon to honor the herald Pheidippides who raced 24.5 miles from the Battlefield of Marathon to the democracy of Athens with news of victory over King Darius’ Persian army in 490 BC. The news rallied the citizens to defend their city against an approaching Persian fleet which survived the battle.

Christo and Jeanne-Claude's 'Running Fence" was installed in September 1976, the bicentennial year of America's Declaration of Independence and in the month of Pheidippides' epic marathon run. Christo started the Running Fence project in October 1972 just after American Frank Shorter’s graceful Olympic Gold Medal victory in September 1972.

'Democracy at Stake' is an 18-foot-high obelisk wrapped Christo-style to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the famous 24.5-mile-long 18-foot-high fabric ‘Running Fence’ completed in 1976. The art project was highly controversial and required many public hearings and open debates before its approval.

The photo at top is of a 10’ high variation installed at Burning Man 2024.

A 4’ variation is available.
