Conversation with a squad is a swarm of curious mechanical squids looking for a bioluminescent conversation. We have an honoraria grant for this year's Burning Man, but it only covers part of the project so we need your help for the rest, and most important, to bring it back to France after the Burn.

Conversation with a squad est un essaim de calamars mécaniques curieux à la recherche d'une discussion. Une partie du projet est financé par une bourse du Burning Man, mais il nous manque encore de quoi faire vivre ce projet, et surtout le ramener en France après.

THE PROJECT

Squids are well known to communicate through a beautiful and intriguing way : bioluminescence. This project is a small squad of squid that are eager to engage in a conversation with humans, using light as a visual language. In front of them is a communication device; a human to squid translator.

The squad is at first sight a group of mechanical squids perched next to each other, smoothly swimming through the breeze. During the day, they appear quite discreet, almost dust-like. They slowly move their motorized fins and tentacles, according to the wind speed, with makes them look like the playa is their ocean floor. At night their bodies start to glow and emit small particles of light through their bodies and fins, which make the group look like a shiny constellation of friendly aliens.

On the floor in front of them, another squid but a more imposing one: the main squid. Made of wood and steel, quite different when you get closer, since he has controls and buttons behind his body, and a small platform to acces the highest buttons.

The main squid is a translating device; you can now send lighting signals to the squids and start talking to them.

When doing so, the squad starts to answer you. They move their fins too, emit light to answer to yours and try to match the colors you are 'talking'. They will also try to send you messages; some patterns emitted by the squad are awaiting an answer. If the answer is correct, they will emit beautiful synchronized unique light patterns.

Finally, some of the words and sentences that you can use to communicate were lost on the playa, and are awaiting to be reunited during the week of the Burning Man....

LE PROJET

Les calmars sont bien connus pour communiquer d'une façon à la fois poétique et intrigante : la bioluminescence. Ce projet est une petite escouade de calamars désireux d'engager une conversation avec les humains, en utilisant la lumière comme langage visuel. Devant eux se trouve un dispositif de communication, un traducteur humain - calmar.

À première vue, on est face à un banc de calmars mécaniques perchés les uns à côté des autres, nageant doucement au gré de la brise. Pendant la journée, ils sont très discrets, presque camouflés. Ils bougent lentement leurs tentacules, en fonction de la vitesse du vent, ce qui donne l'impression que le désert dans lequel ils se trouvent est leur fond marin. La nuit, leur corps se met à briller et émet de petites particules de lumière à travers leur corps et leurs nageoires, ce qui fait ressembler le groupe à une constellation de petits aliens brillants.

Sur le sol, devant eux, un autre calmar, mais plus imposant : le calmar principal. Fait de bois et d'acier, il est très différent lorsqu'on s'en approche, car il possède des commandes et des boutons derrière son corps, ainsi qu'une petite plate-forme pour accéder aux boutons les plus élevés.

Le calmar principal est un dispositif de traduction ; vous pouvez maintenant envoyer des signaux lumineux aux calamars et commencer à leur parler. Le banc commence alors à vous répondre. Ils bougent leurs nageoires, émettent de la lumière pour répondre à la vôtre et essaient de s'aligner sur les couleurs que vous "parlez". Ils essaient également de vous envoyer des messages ; certains motifs émis par le banc attendent une réponse. Si la réponse est correcte, ils émettront des motifs lumineux uniques et synchronisés.

Enfin, certains des mots et des phrases que vous pouvez utiliser pour communiquer ont été perdus sur la playa et attendent d'être retrouvés pendant la semaine du Burning Man....

------------ THE TEAM ------------

L'équipe française 

Alexia, Marie-pauline, Clément, Mika, Clément, Ben

La partie française de l'équipe se compose de 6 membres qui combinent différentes origines créatives et nombreuses compétences : construction, électronique, programmation, graphisme, éclairage, travail du bois et du métal... Une partie de l'équipe se soude notamment lors de notre premier projet honoraria à Burning Man 2018. Leur côté "frenchie" leur donne une fâcheuse tendance à travailler avec toujours un verre de rosé à proximité et à passer un peu trop de temps à préparer leur prochain petit plat... Ce sont eux qui s'occupe de la conception et du prototypage de nos calamars mécaniques!

L'équipe américaine 

Zac et Kaitlyn combinent également de sacré compétences en construction et organisation. Zac rencontre certains frenchies lors du Burning Man 2017 puis travaille avec nous en 2018. A eux deux, ils assurent une grande partie de la logistique du projet, en préparant l'accueil de l'équipe française, l'espace de travail pour le chantier, les matériaux, l'outillage, etc. Nos deux équipes préparent tout à distance, mais les retrouvailles sont proches! En Août, tous seront réunis sur le chantier, pour enfin donner vie au projet. Tout le monde a hâte de voir exister l'escouade de calamars sur la playa... !

The French team

Alexia, Marie-pauline, Clément, Mika, Clément, Ben

The French part of the team is made up of 6 members who combine different creative backgrounds and numerous skills: construction, electronics, programming, graphic design, lighting, wood and metal work... Part of the team bonded during our first honoraria project at burning man 2018. Their "Frenchie" side gives them an annoying tendency to always work with a glass of rosé nearby and to spend a little too much time preparing their next little dish... They're the ones in charge of designing and prototyping our mechanical squids!

The American team

Zac and Kaitlyn also combine great skills in construction and organization. Zac met some of the Frenchies at Burning Man 2017 and then worked with us in 2018. Between them, they handle a large part of the project's logistics, preparing the French team's arrival in the US, the workspace, materials and tools. Our two teams prepare everything from a distance, but the reunion is just around the corner! In August, everyone will be reunited on site, to finally bring the project to life. Everyone's looking forward to seeing the squid squad on the playa... !
