ZIMO's Getting Up is small, self contained full solo journaling & sketching TTRPG I made during Zine Month 2023.
While I've been designing board games for a few years, this is
my first TTRPG design and also my first zine.
In ZIMO's
getting up, I've condensed all my thoughts (and many many
drafts) about graffiti based games into a 20 pages solo role playing
game experience.
You playing the game will be as much going through the mechanics as
it is about writing the story of your character... with the added
twist that you'll also be sketching graffiti in your
journal.
Sketching in your actual journal/blackbook actually
gives you mechanical advantage in the game.
In 20 pages, I've crammed the rules to play the game but also
the rules by which graffiti writers mostly abide with, which will
likely change the way you look at graffiti if you are not familiar
with the scene. I've also added a glossary so that immersion doesn't
have to stop to look up the meaning of some words on the internet.
The games proper starts on a guide to create your own setting
including an oracle to get you started , plus a location sheet to
record the vital part.
There is also a character sheet which will involve paper clips!
NPCs get their generation guide and oracle as well as their own
tracking sheet.
In
terms of mechanics, it mostly gets out of the way.
It is a with a simple 2d10 + (static) attribute, or 2d10 -
progress bar roll.
All the 16 moves fall under the 2d10 rolls, with their outcome
being a strong hit/weak hit/miss result.
Progression is not that
quick and makes rolls harder over time, providing for difficult choices.
The
consequences influence your character health, money, time, supplies,
as well as stress and heat tracks.
The really bad consequences left to the player to find what best
suit the story, with an oracle to guide both the story narrative and
the mechanic.
TL;DR: ZIMO's getting up brings the world of graffiti and street art to your tabletop in a condensed but fully flavoursome way.
I'm only distributing the Zine in paper format in the UK for
now, and every backer will get a PDF version.
