Jesse Lambert hasn't added a story.

Hello ! I am an SPX 2023 exhibitor who makes nonfiction comics on a wide range of topics (art , history , COVID , travel ) often with an auto-bio element , personal perspective, or reflection. You can follow me at  @4thwallcomix on instagram . For a couple of years I have been writing and drawing a book-length graphic memoir about my unconventional childhood. I have decided to self-publish the first chapter as a 36-page long booklet. By beginning to put the story out into the world, I am hoping to build an audience and motivate myself to push on further with the project.

My memoir, titled The Group, tells the story of growing up in the ‘70s-‘80s as part of a psychotherapy cult known as the Sullivanians. The first chapter, called Moving Day, is an introduction to the longer story of how the Sullivanian community and belief system affected my childhood and reverberated into my adult years. Because the nuclear family was seen as inherently damaging, cult therapy dictated that I was separated from parents and sent away to boarding school at a very early age. Moving Day paints a picture of my boarding school environs, including flashbacks to my earliest days there. It sets in motion a sequence of events that will eventually force me to face uncomfortable truths, make difficult choices, and embark on a journey towards self-acceptance as I reexamine the past.

I am offering a few different reward levels: digital or physical copies of the book, a bundle of self-published minicomics, and a selection of archival giclée prints.

The risks of backing this project are minimal as the chapter is already close to finished, with just a few pages left to draw. The money raised by this Crowdfundr will go towards printing and shipping costs for the booklet. The booklet will be sent out to supporters in late October or early November. If I get beyond my target goal, any additional funds will go towards supporting further work on the memoir.

Too often cult stories are objectifying, sensationalist, and in the worst cases, exploitive of the people involved. Memoir has the unique ability to center the subjective experience and dignity of survivors. By backing this project you not only become a supporter of it, but also a vital contributor to its making. Your support raises up my voice, encourages me to keep on going with a demanding in progress project, and gives me a connection to my audience. It will only have meaning if read, only be relevant if it spreads compassion, understanding, and relatability. Thank you for your interest and generosity!
