This fundraiser is for a prospective docudrama, “Kashful”, on the RG Kar homicide in Kolkata, India.

Why we’re doing it: Given the tumultuous climate surrounding the case — as it involves a rape and murder of a doctor who may have been targeted due to her alleged awareness of various malpractices involving organ and dead bodies trafficking in the hospital — this documentary would be highly nascent and culturally necessary. Protests and doctor strikes are currently underway in the city, as of this pitch (September 2024).

Kolkata is known for the Durga Puja festival that comes every October, a celebration of womanhood — embodied in mythology. The goddess Durga and her defeat of the Oshur (the demon) paints a culture that respects and idealizes femininity. The documentary would take a close look at how such a culture responds to the violent desecration of these ideals, especially when it happened in such close proximity to the festival.

It would not be a crime documentary exposing the tenuous details of an ever-expanding plethora of medical malpractices in Bengal, but an intimate look at how a community of people responded so such violence — captured against the backdrop of the Durga festival, and all its apparent reverence of womanhood.

The docufilm's working title, “Kashful”, is the Bengali name for wild sugarcane that blooms around the same time as the festival, and is culturally associated with Durga’s arrival.

Renowned Bengali director, Partha Chakraborty (of "Samantaral" fame) is personally interested in making this film and Canada-based Bengali journalist and author, Kaberi Dutta Chatterjee is personally writing the narrative.
