In most parts of the world the Dragonfly symbolizes change, transformation, adaptability, and self-realization. The last metamorphosis stage of a dragonfly is when a nymph leaves the water, walks to dry land, and with its last molt, the body and wings of the dragonfly expand. This process is named “Emergence."

What We’re Building

With a wingspan of 30 ft, body length of 30 ft and height of 15 ft, the dragonfly frame will be constructed with new structural steel. The frame will be decorated in up-cycled materials, scrap metal and fabric. Elements of iridescence and mirror will be incorporated into the design to mimic the true body and wings and to offer true reflection of the visitor.

The setting for the dragonfly on the dry playa will be an illusion of a pond, from which the dragonfly just emerged. Surrounding the pond will be sculpted flowers, lily pads and grasses also made from up-cycled steel materials and scrap. 

The dragonfly will be lighted at night with flowing pulses of rainbow and white light, providing energy and inspiration to those who come to realize transformation, rebirth and awakening are here and calling them in.

This fabricated scene of nature creates an inviting space for all to gather, play, rest and reflect. Natural soundscapes help set the mood for releasing and dropping into the physical moment. The flora and body and wings of the dragonfly provide comfort and respite from the hot days.

The Philosophy of Emergence is that this watering hole in the desert is a place for those to be called upon, to reflect on their own lives in a peaceful space, where transformation is encouraged and celebrated. A shared tragedy in the lives of the crew behind this piece is the impetus for sharing this symbolism with the Burning Man community and beyond. Our hope is to communicate with participants that the metamorphosis of life is beautiful in all forms.

Who We Are

Our team is made up of artists, builders, project managers, pixel pushers, music makers, and boss ladies. Most of us have been burning the man for over a decade. In the past, we have brought small art installations to the playa, we’ve hosted pop-up pizza parlors and booty shaking dance parties. Our most accomplished project was the Dusty Cobra Art Car from 2013 to 2017, which was led by our most fierce and dear friend Steve Shelby. Steve passed on to the next realm unexpectedly on October 31, 2020 at Black Rock Hot Springs. He embodied all 10 Burning Man Principles and had an affinity to dragonflies. This piece will pay homage to his and so many others short but beautiful journey on earth.

Why We Need Your Help

Emergence has been graciously awarded with a generous grant from Burning Man’s Black Rock City Honoraria Program, which should cover about half of our budget. While some of Emergence materials are up-cycled, there are many expenses that we will need to cover from transportation to structural steel. 

There are several more costs to this project:  wire, tools, lighting, sound and many other expenses. To ensure this inspiring good omen is safe, delivered on time, and properly built we ask for your support to help raise the remaining funds needed to bring Emergence to Burning Man 2022.
