Mission Statement
Help us bring this darkly funny, deeply wordy, and distressingly relevant production about our nation's Perpetual First Lady to Hollywood Fringe. We're excavating Jackie Kennedy to explore the fabric of American culture and politics today, the contradiction of existing in a world that can only offer representations when relating to one another.
About The Project
How do we fabricate ourselves? Can we ever pin them down? A play about the many selves of Jackie Kennedy Onassis.
WHAT?
Jackie is written by the 2004 winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, Austrian playwright and novelist Elfriede Jelinek ( The Piano Teacher) . In a stunning English translation by Gitta Honegger, the North American premiere of the play was produced by the Women’s Project Theatre Company at New York City Center Stage II in 2013, directed by Tea Alagic. This production is the first time the translation has been produced professionally on the West Coast; it is directed by Brian Eckert and stars Everleigh Brenner.
WHO?
Brian and Everleigh are collaborators and friends who met on a recent project about another American icon, Walt Disney. It was through Lucas Hnath’s play about Disney that Brian and Everleigh formed a bond and shared language over examining the figures that loom large over American life.
Brian (Director/Producer) first read Jelinek’s play while abroad in Berlin in 2016 as part of a study on postdramatic theater. As an artist who typically approaches work with a love of structure, the style of the play known for its purposefully disordered composition continues to be an exciting challenge to work on. He felt that with Everleigh (Performer/Producer), he found the right partner to make something beautifully effectual out of this meaty text. Together, Everleigh and Brian hope to challenge audiences with this dissection of performance, the self, and language itself.
HOW?
We need you to make this project happen. We are currently in pre-production for the play slated to perform as part of Hollywood Fringe in June of this year. In order for us to get to the festival opening at the Broadwater Theater, we need to raise at least our goal listed here. The rest of our production costs are expected to be covered by ticket prices, but if we are able to meet and surpass our goal we will be able to increase our production value, pay our artists a higher stipend, and reimburse our production team for the material costs they incur.
