Ghana, the first sub-Saharan African nation to gain independence, has long been a beacon of Pan-Africanism, forging deep connections within the global Black diaspora. From Kwame Nkrumah’s invitation to Martin Luther King Jr. for Ghana’s independence festival in 1957, to the wave of civil rights leaders, activists, and artists who followed, such as, Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Maya Angelou, and W.E.B. DuBois. Ghana has remained a homeland for those seeking reconnection to Africa.  At the heart of this movement stands Nana Kwame Akuoko-Sarpong, the Paramount Chief of Agogo, a major City-State part of the Asante empire whose leadership has strengthened ties between Ghana and Black America. Through his visionary efforts, Agogo became sister cities with  Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and he was the first Paramount chief to enstool Black Americans as divisional chiefs, giving them a place of honor and to be a member of royalty, in Ghanaian tradition. These leaders, such as Nana Yao Dinizulu , Ra Un Nefer Amen of the Ausar Auset  Society, Nana Kofi Tuuda of Asante Nkonmin Kurom, Dr. Patricia A. Newton, Dr. Leonard Jeffries, and Professor James Small, have played key roles in bringing Akan culture, spirituality, and governance to the United States. Beyond his role as a cultural bridge, Nana Kwame has also been a political force, serving as Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and mending diplomatic relations with the United States, after the coup of Kwame Nkrumah. Known as the “kingmaker,” Nana Kwame has shaped leadership across Ghana, Africa, and the black diaspora.  As Nana Kwame prepares to mark a historic milestone in December 2025, becoming Agogo’s longest reigning chief—his legacy will be honored with a golden jubilee at his royal palace in 2026.  This documentary will explore the past, present, and future of this powerful transatlantic connection, highlighting the enduring impact of one man’s mission to unify a people separated by history but bound by heritage.
