STORY
In a suburb just outside of Toronto’s downtown core, Adeela, an Indo-Caribbean Muslim teenager, lives a life full of daydreams and desires. Secretly fiery, she struggles to find her confidence in emotionally limiting environments that feel out of her control. Through her daydreams, Adeela explores what it would be like to be the stylish, artsy, justice-seeking young woman she yearns to be, but in reality, she's hesitant to show that confidence. Inspired by an outspoken classmate, Adeela discovers that she alone can give herself the push she needs.
WHY SUPPORT
One Day is a groundbreaking short film centered around a hijabi Muslim Indo-Caribbean teen. Played by Indo-Guyanese actress Rebecca Ablack (Ginny and Georgia), Adeela’s character is the first of her kind on screen. This film breaks away from stereotypes, offering an authentic representation of a young woman who is navigating multiple identities while striving to find her voice.
In a time when Islamophobia and harmful stereotypes dominate the screen, this film offers a fresh perspective. It’s a story of agency, self-discovery, and empowerment, aimed at Muslim, Indo-Caribbean, and BPOC communities who rarely see themselves represented in a meaningful, nuanced way.
By supporting One Day, you are helping create a space for diverse voices in cinema and empowering young women to believe in themselves, just as Adeela learns to do.
DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
As an Indo-Caribbean Muslim who grew up in a predominantly white high school, filmmaking was my escape. Writing One Day was a way for me to reflect on my growth, and it sparked conversations with other Muslim and Indo-Caribbean women who shared similar experiences of isolation in their teen years.
This film is about a teen girl who has the fire to stand up for herself, but lacks the confidence to do so. I wanted to tell a story about someone like me – a daydreamer, a creative, a young woman trying to navigate a world that often doesn't make space for her. Through Adeela's journey, I hope to inspire young women, especially Muslim and Indo-Caribbean girls, to take up space, challenge societal expectations, and feel empowered to pursue their dreams.
