Why This Film? Why Now? - A Word From the Author.

In a world dominated by personality it's easy to believe success revolves around popularity. For decades young people have defined their self-worth by how much their peers admire them. While a select few enjoy the glory of approval, most retreat into the shadows to, as Thoreau wrote, "live lives of quiet desperation", invisible to everyone around them.

We live in an age that rewards the loud, the fast, and the normal. Anyone who processes the world differently is marginalized and left to navigate the noise alone.

The Audit, inspired by two of my adult children, isn’t just a film about neurodivergence and sensory overload; it is a story about the universal ache to be recognized by the person standing right in front of us.

Whether it is a son yearning for his father to acknowledge his uniqueness, or an employee who clocks in everyday, does their job unnoticed, and goes home, we all know the weight of a dream denied.

Visibility shouldn't be a privilege bestowed upon the few. Instead, visibility should be considered an inalienable right granted us through our Creator and our shared humanity.

This little light of mine, I'm going to let it shine.

Sincerely,

EDS

Synopsis: The High Cost of Silence

Joshua lives in the margins of a world that is too loud, too bright, and too fast. He survives by adhering to a rigid, self-imposed routine: A delicate architecture of silence and predictability designed to keep the noise of the world at bay.

But today, Joshua's walls are closing in.

An impending corporate audit has sent his office into a fever pitch. To the rest of the staff, it’s a matter of career advancement and raises. To Joshua, it's unwanted stress. A tension that manifests as a high-frequency shriek and a physical weight that threatens to shatter his composure. When his emotionally estranged father refuses to see  Joshua standing right in front of him, the internal pressure reaches a breaking point.

Caught in the crossfire of a looming professional disaster and personal invisibility, Joshua is on the verge of a total sensory meltdown.

The only thing standing between him and the abyss is an unlikely anchor: a co-worker who has sat ten feet away for years, quietly observing, completely aware of his existence and his name.

The Audit is a fifteen-minute journey into the mind of someone fighting to stay grounded in a world that would rather they disappear.

The Audit: A Statement of Intent

Every story has a cost, and some debts are harder to settle than others.

I have spent over twenty years behind cameras and typewriters, and thirty years running a business, first in Ohio and now in Garland, TX.. The one thing I’ve learned is it’s that an audit isn't just about credits and debits or profits and losses. An audit includes the emotional debts we owe to ourselves, our families, and our pasts.

The Audit is a project born from an intersection of accountability and tangibility. It is a tight, character driven narrative that explores the high stakes of a single moment of emotional turmoil.

Because I am bypassing the traditional 'pitch video' to put every available dollar directly onto the screen, I am asking you to trust the words on the page and my two decades of experience in bringing scripts to life. Your support isn't just funding a short film; it is investing in a professional, seasoned approach to independent cinema.

Join me in making The Audit a reality.

Budget Breakdown Analysis of The Audit

How the Funds Will be Used

The total budget calculated from the provided values is $9,375. Here is a summary of the breakdown:

  • Cast & Crew: $3,000 (32%)

  • Crowdfunding Costs: $1,875 (20%)

  • Locations & Insurance: $1,125 (12%)

  • Equipment Rental: $1,125 (12%)

  • Post-Production: $1,125 (12%)

  • Production Design: $750 (8%)

  • Crafty & Logistics: $375 (4%)

Risks and Challenges: The Audit

Every film production carries inherent risks, but with 30 years of business management and 20 years of filmmaking experience, my goal is to anticipate and mitigate those risks before we ever set foot on set. Here is how we are protecting your investment in The Audit:

  • Production Delays & Scheduling
Independent film often struggles with 'scheduling soup'—trying to align actors and locations.

The Mitigation: We are focusing on a contained production. By utilizing two primary locations right here in North Texas and keeping our cast small, we minimize the variables that lead to delays. We have also built a 15% time buffer into our pre-production phase to account for any unforeseen scheduling shifts.

  • Budgetary Constraints
Costs can spiral if not monitored.

The Mitigation: As a business owner, I am used to operating within strict margins. The $7,500 goal reflects a lean, professional budget where 70% of funds go directly 'on-screen' (Cast, Crew, and Sound). We are utilizing local resources and established industry relationships in the Dallas/Garland area to ensure we get 'big budget' quality without the 'big budget' waste.

  • The Sensory Challenge (Post-Production)
The success of The Audit relies heavily on complex sound design. If the post-production sound isn't perfect, the story doesn't work.

The Mitigation: We have prioritized sound in our budget from Day 1. Instead of leaving sound design for whatever is left over, we have already identified the professional sound engineers we intend to work with to ensure Joshua's story is heard exactly as it was written.

Let's Square the Books

We have calculated the precise costs, secured our initial Garland locations, and established a lean budget where 80% goes directly to the screen.

The Audit will be produced, but we need your support to access the high-fidelity sound engineering necessary to authentically tell Joshua's story. Every contribution is an investment in professional, local cinema that helps bring the battles of the neurodivergent to light. Help us make a film that doesn't just show you Joshua's world but makes you hear it and helps you feel it, so that you can better understand the need we all have for human connection.
