Una historia diferente arde en su interior: una de rebelión, pasión y libertad. Liz se adentra al mundo del teatro—un espacio en donde por fin puede florecer. Ahí se enamora de una de las actrices de la obra—no es el amor que le dijeron que debía procurar, pero sí el que la hace sentirse vista por vez primera.

Liz ha trabajado por años en una tienda de segunda mano, y una
de sus obligaciones es usar una botarga de mariquita para atraer
transeúntes. Este elemento se desarrollará a través de matices de
fantasía y surrealismo, utilizando una metáfora kafkiana
para profundizar en el mundo interior de Liz. Como un insecto, ella
se siente pequeñita e insignificante, ignorada por quienes la rodean
y valorada sólo en su papel de madre y proveedora. Paradójicamente,
es la misma criatura que encarna —la mariquita— la que emerge para
sacarla de las sombras, convirtiéndola en un híbrido mujer-insecto,
tanto metafórica como literalmente, guiándola para que se reconecte
consigo misma.

Liz has worked in a secondhand store for years, performing endless tasks. One of her duties is to wear a ladybug costume to capture the attention of passersby. Libertinas will unfold through elements of fantasy and surrealism, using a Kafkaesque metaphor to go deeper into Liz's internal world. Like an insect, she feels small and insignificant—overlooked by those around her and valued only in her roles as a mother and economic provider. Paradoxically, it is the very creature she impersonates—the ladybug—that emerges as a fantastic, transformative force. This surreal being pulls her out of the shadows, turning her into a hybrid of woman and insect, both metaphorically and literally, guiding her to reconnect with herself.

Libertinas will carry an unsettling tone, grounded in psychological tension and illogical situations rather than conventional horror tropes. The film’s spaces will act as emotional extensions of Liz’s inner world. The thrift store and family home will feel cramped and claustrophobic, cluttered with objects that physically and emotionally restrict her. In contrast, the theatre will serve as Liz’s sanctuary—a space where she can truly be herself. Its openness will reflect a sense of freedom and comfort, offering her a rare escape.
Color will play a central role in the production design, emphasizing the vibrancy of Latin American culture. This visual richness will enhance the story’s surreal and fantastical atmosphere, reinforcing the unique world inhabited by its characters.
Desde que inicié a hacer cine, mi trabajo se ha centrado en
contar historias sobre mujeres y los retos a los que se enfrentan en
América Latina. Como cineasta de El Salvador—uno de los países más
represivos en tema de derechos de la mujer— siento la necesidad de
retratar protagonistas que desafían las normas preestablecidas.
En Libertinas, exploro la concepción de la mujer como madre, a menudo idealizada como un ser abnegado al extremo, cuyo único propósito es la maternidad. Considero que estos ideales ahogan a las mujeres en una ola de exigencias colectivas que pretenden dirigir sus comportamientos. Para mí, el arte —y el cine en particular— es una herramienta poderosa para contar historias no tradicionales. Abre un espacio para la reflexión crítica al tiempo que sumerge al público en mundos fantásticos. Ese es el tipo de efecto que aspiro generar con este proyecto.

Since I began making films, my work has centered on telling stories about women and the challenges we face in Latin America. As a filmmaker from El Salvador—one of the most repressive countries in terms of women's rights and freedoms—I am driven to portray female protagonists who defy and break away from societal norms.
In Libertinas , I explore the myth of the maternal figure, often idealized as a flawless, ethereal being whose sole purpose is motherhood. I believe these ideals drown women in a wave of collective demands that seek to control our behavior. For me, art—and cinema in particular—is a powerful tool to tell untraditional stories. It creates space for critical reflection while immersing audiences in imaginative and fantastical worlds. That is the kind of compelling work I aspire to create with this project.

Salvadoran filmmaker with a degree in Journalism and Communications, and over 10 years of experience creating content for film and television. She is the co-director and co-writer of the feature film Lienzo en Blanco / Blurred Women, which premiered in 2022 and has screened at festivals such as the Toronto Latin American Film Festival and the Chicago Latino Film Festival.
