Derek N. Ali - was a journalist from Philadelphia, PA who impacted many lives in the city of Dayton, Ohio for over twenty years.

He was an incredible journalist, and accomplished so much in his short 46 years. He was a father to three daughters, a servant leader in his community; who advocated for all community members having a voice, especially those underserved. He was also involved in many fraternal and community organizations that helped to inspire his service and love for all mankind.

Derek Ali, was often referred to as a local celebrity, but had connections nationwide. He never met a stranger and died a hero; pushing a woman out of the line of fire, taking a bullet to the chest and dying at the scene.

It has been twenty years since his passing, yet, his legacy lives on. Derek Ali approached service and storytelling in such an authentic and intentional way. It's finally time to give his story and legacy the same honor. 

I'm his daughter, Leah Ali-Johnson. I wrote a piece you can read here recently reflecting on beautiful times we shared. However, I have felt called to develop this project, a documentary, in my Dads honor. 

This documentary will span from the very beginning of his life's journey from the East Coast (Philadelphia and New Jersey) to his life and work in Ohio leading up to his death. The documentary will be a beautiful depiction of his life, his story, by highlighting the people and places that knew and loved him best. 

His story needs to be told so that his legacy lives on forever, and so that Derek N. Ali can continue to inspire, even after death.
