What is The Science of Crowdfunding?
The Science of Crowdfunding synthesizes lessons from the scientific literature to provide strategies and tactics associated with successful project launches. This book helps other creators to optimize their crowdfunding campaigns so they can be more successful.
The book covers three main topic areas:
- The campaign page
- Rewards
- Engaging your backers
I review the science to highlight the most relevant tips for creators, which you can use to launch your creative career.
The Science of Crowdfunding
Hi! I'm John Ward, an indie comic book creator and author who is passionate about using data-informed decision-making to help other creators successfully launch their crowdfunding projects.
Crowdfunding is an important tool for creators, who can use it to directly find and engage an audience, without having to navigate numerous gatekeepers and middle-men.
But crowdfunding platforms are not the same as sales platforms, and the common tips and tricks that work for sales may be ineffective at engaging a crowdfunding audience. Moreover, running a crowdfunding campaign is a lot of work - at least if you want it to be successful - and there is no shortage of people giving advice on how to optimize your campaign for success.
Some of this advice is great. Some of it is questionable. Most of it is subjective.
As a creator, my interest is in using crowdfunding to support my creative endeavours, but I also have a background in science, and wanted to know what - if anything - the scientific literature has to say about crowdfunding.
The answer, it turns out, is plenty.
Crowdfunding generates vast quantities of data, which are available for analysis and hypothesis testing, primarily through regression analysis - but which also stimulated experimental tests which aimed to identify the variables most associated with success.
Don't worry. This isn't a science book. It's a book for creators that highlights the scientific evidence to support key tips and tools that can help you be more successful.
This book is based on a series of essays I wrote through 2023 and 2024, primarily for other creators, and which are collected here for the first time. Back it, and learn how to optimize your crowdfunding campaigns in just a few short chapters.

What makes this book unique?
This book is written by a creator for other creators.
The Science of Crowdfunding is intended for creators who are interested in exploring crowdfunding to support their creative careers, and experienced crowdfunding creators who want to know more about best practices identified in the scientific literature.
There are many books out there for creators looking to successfully crowdfund, but many of them are written by people who have never launched a crowdfunding project, and almost none of them use supporting evidence from the scientific literature.
This doesn't invalidate them, but it does mean there is a gap in the literature, which this book tries to fill.

Who am I?
Hi, my name is John Ward, and I'm a Vancouver-based writer, filmmaker, and podcaster. I have a PhD in theoretical physics and held positions at CERN, the University of Iceland, and the University of Victoria. My recent horror novella "Three tokens for Mammon" was published by Black Hare Press, and my short stories have been published by Black Hare Press, Printed Words, Haunted MTL, PsychoToxin Press and others. My comic books include The Memory Machine, Scratcher, Acausal, Dark Fragments, Offbeats, and I've had numerous stories in comic anthologies. I've successfully run five Kickstarter campaigns and participated in several others, so I know what it takes to deliver a high-quality, limited edition product.
