Cinder Byrnes should be one of those wizards. His grandfather was one of the heroes who ended the war, and everyone else in his family can wield powerful magic. But Cinder can't cast even the simplest spell, and is reliant on any and every magical trick he can steal in order to hold his own in this dangerous world. 

But he has a plan - he believes there's a spell out there that can grant him the powers he seeks, and repair his connection to magic. He's been tracking pieces of it his entire life, and he's finally found the last clue. All he needs is a wizard to cast it on him - if he can stay alive long enough to evade The Morgue and her daughter Shiver - the leader of a murderous gang of magical criminals known as the Ghost Knives, who rule the city's underworld. His quest will lead him to the dark secret behind the wizards of World War II, and why he's cut off from magical power.

Gutter Magic Volume 2: Smoke and Mirrors

The adventure continues as Cinder learns that getting what you want can come with unintended consequences, as he makes a deadly new enemy in Lord Summervale, an elf with a grudge to bear against his grandfather. Summervale will stop at nothing to get his revenge, while his chief minion, a mage known only as Smoke, wonders whether vengeance is more important than love. 

Meanwhile, for the first time in her life, Shiver is free from her mother's influence. But with the Morgue behind bars, and the Ghost Knives on the run - what role does she have left to play? And is Cinder going to let a little thing like trying to murder him get between them?
