La Toya A. Hampton, MSW (she/her/they) a native of Portland, Oregon, is a queer Black and Indigenous femme educator, entrepreneur, and poet, who began performing spoken word poetry in 2008, using the stage name Lady Rose, in memory of her late father, Roosevelt.
She has performed at open mics in both Portland and Los Angeles and has been a featured artist of Blacque Butterfly's Soulful Showcase, Unchaste Readers Series, Screen Time Slam, One Mic One Globe, SoapBox Poets Open Mic, Love is King’s Women’s History Month Nature Walk Honoring Dr. Maya Angelou, Community Alliance of Tenant’s (CAT) “Tenants on the Mic” and more. Her poem "Brown Knows" is featured throughout the acclaimed documentary Black Girl in Suburbia (www.blackgirlinsuburbia.com) and is credited as a performer/songwriter on Ancient Lapis: A Collection of Folktales and Testimonies.
Her work has been published in Concordia University Portland’s “The Promethean” (2008), She Rose Magazine “Sex Issue” (March 2022), and Los Angeles Poet Society’s “Acid Verse Volume II: The Earth Beneath Our Feet” (March 2022). She is one of 12 artists chosen to be featured as part of University of Oregon’s “Unceded Kinship: Land, Place and People” exhibition taking place from June 1st 2022 through September 2022. Current major themes of her work are focused on Black Pride, identity, spirituality and healing the Mother Wound.
In 2013, she spearheaded her one-woman show, "Holes of a Piece of Me: An Introduction to Lady Rose," at Headwaters Theatre in Portland, Oregon and self-published a zine of the same name. Though she viewed that as an accomplishment, many have asked when she would formally/professionally publish her works. Well, she believes that time now.
Lady Rose has long been a youth and community advocate. Both on a personal and professional basis, she has always offered and been a go-to for being an advocate for others in need of assistance and getting their needs met. An as an educator and mentor to youth for more than 20 years, La Toya has also conducted classes/presentations for elementary, middle and high school students, helping them to explore poetry and use writing as a form of self-care and expression, as well as a tool to uncover and share in common interests and struggle.
Receiving donations towards the completion of this project, will not only be personally and professionally fulfilling for her, but will also have real and positive impacts of a potentially much farther reach. Her example, message, representation of often marginalized communities, numerous achievements despite experiencing traumas of emotional and physical abuse, and using writing and performing as a form of self-expression and self-care, as well as a vehicle to connect with and be a voice for others, serves as tools of inspiration and empowerment for others of all ages and backgrounds.
She is available for spoken word performances, workshops, teaching artist in schools, coaching, tutoring, consulting, panel discussions, keynote presentations, commissioned pieces, event hosting, competition judging, corporate events and special projects.
The fundraising goal is $7,000.
