“An important documentary that brings HOPE to people suffering from mental illness”
Cut To The Point
This short documentary will explore the relationship between the
beach, surfing and mental health as well as the relationship between
a mother battling crippling anxiety and depression and her boys as
she takes on learning to surf for the first time.
A Little Bit More
K is a 41-year-old mother desperate to find calm amongst the chaos of life as she battles with crippling depression and anxiety.
K is no different to any other working mum except that her responsibilities as a partner, mum, step-mum and business-woman far outweigh her perceived capacity in life.
The hellish nightmare of mental illness that K experiences makes even the smallest of tasks seem huge at best and unbearable at times. Everybody except K thinks she has it all together.
In her quest to improve her mental health and find inner peace, Chaos to Calm explores K's love of the ocean and the impact it has on her mental health.
Set on the idyllic beaches of Evans Head, Northern NSW, we follow K in this short documentary as she incorporates new daily practices and regular visits to the beach, slowly heading from Chaos to Calm.
The Why
I am very exited to launch my debut film career as a student of Kyogle Film Academy. Storytelling is a powerful tool and I am priveledged to be able to share some of my journey with mental health with my community. Having been born in Kyogle and raised in Evans Head, this film is very personal to me and and also an important story to share. I have always wanted to share stories with the world and Kyogle Film Academy has given me the opportunity to finally become the filmmaker I want to be.
What We Need
- Catering - Food and Coffe for film crew during shoot weekend
- Surfboard - I am learning to surf for the very first time in this film and would love a locally made board to ride
- Shoot Location - River Cabin
- Local Merchandise - Miscellaneous items to appear on set in the film
- Monetary Contributions - Will also be used to hire a professional camerman, rent or purchase cinematic film gear and any associated costs of having a film crew on location in Evans Head for the shoot weekend.
The Importance
Depression and Anxiety are becoming more and more common, something that we think we have to live with forever, sometimes without hope of ever improving.
We are generally aware of the impact suicide has on our communities, especially on the Far North Coast of NSW, however, something I found in my recovery was that we didn’t have to live like this. It took me years of therapy to be told that there was a cure for the type of crippling depression and anxiety that was eating away at me and many other people I know.
Based on my experience of mental illness over a long period of time, ‘Chaos to Calm’ shows the intricacies of mental health recovery and gives viewers hope that there is a way out of the darkness.
