The world's coral reefs are entering one of the most critical periods in their evolutionary history. In October 2025, scientists warned that warm-water coral reefs had crossed a major global climate tipping point. Even if global warming is limited to 1.5°C, widespread reef degradation remains a grave threat.
The consequences extend far beyond coral. Reefs sustain extraordinary marine biodiversity, support millions of livelihoods, protect coastlines and form part of humanity's irreplaceable natural heritage.
We cannot preserve what we fail to protect. But we must never lose the evidence of what once existed.
The ANIMA HAI Global Coral Reefs Vault is our response.
Beginning in 2027, ANIMA HAI will document 100 geo-tagged coral reefs across the world's tropical seas, creating a permanent digital archive of original photographs, films, scientific observations and firsthand accounts.
Every reef will receive a unique identity. Every record will carry a location and date. Together, they will establish a scientific baseline for future generations.
The Vault will not simply store the past. It will track the future.
As registered contributors deposit new photographs and observations, artificial intelligence will compare them against the original 2027 baseline, generating a Reef Health Report Card identifying observable coral loss, bleaching, mortality, resilience and recovery.
The Vault preserves the original evidence. AI analyses the change.
In 2055, ANIMA HAI aims to return to all 100 reefs within a single year, repeating the original photographic viewpoints and observations wherever possible.
Same reefs. Same locations. Twenty-eight years apart.
The resulting evidence will help future scientists understand which reefs survived, which deteriorated, where biodiversity declined and where conservation succeeded.
AN INHERITANCE FOR A CHILD NOT YET BORN
Imagine a child born in 2035.
In 2055, that child will be twenty years old. They may visit a reef whose corals, fishes and biodiversity have changed profoundly since 2027.
Through the Vault, they will be able to see what existed before they were born.
Not an AI reconstruction. Not a historical interpretation. But original photographs, films, scientific records and testimony from people who witnessed these reefs firsthand.
The Vault will give future children the power to understand their natural inheritance, study environmental change and participate in protecting what remains.
It will also empower the next generation of marine scientists, climate researchers, conservationists and ocean storytellers with a permanent, accessible record of ecological change.
This is more than preserving pictures. It is preserving knowledge, evidence and the opportunity for future generations to act.
