THE END OF TIME
Hi, I'm Andrea and I'm fundraising for a public art installation which is being created for Burning Man 2024 for which the theme is 'Curiouser and Curiouser', inspired by the story of Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. This tale of the absurd and the nonsensical is a magical invitation to an artist and proved irresistible both to me and to my long time collaborator Andy Tibbetts.
The End of Time is a dying clock, in fact it is a murdered clock. As a consequence, Time has stopped and now it will forever be Teatime. This artwork illustrates the death of one clock, which will result in the death of all clocks and therefore Time itself. It does so in a whimsical manner designed to disturb but entertain at the same time. If you are familiar with the mad world of Wonderland you will know that the Red Queen accused the Mad Hatter of murdering time, which stopped at 6 o'clock and remained stuck at Teatime. | The End of Time is a large 22 feet tall climbable installation in the form of a surreal collapsing clock, pierced by a huge sword, its mechanism broken and exposed, its numerals distorted, with a giant teacup and a saucer perched precariously at the top. It is made of tubular steel, polished stainless steel, and aluminium, powder-coated in gold, silver, and antique bronze. It has faces on both the front and the back but there is something wrong with the display and it has curious curly hands on both sides. It also has strange spidery legs. A huge mysterious key is hanging inside it but what is it for? The Teacup that surmounts the Clock will be able to accommodate 6 people at a time sitting on a circular bench in a surprisingly intimate setting.
| The artwork plays with the idea of Time being brought to a standstill by a violent act. This makes all clocks everywhere stop at six o’clock. Condemned to Teatime in perpetuity how do we act? Can we continue to act? Can we live without measuring Time? Do we need Clocks? What is that key for? Can we unlock Time? Why does the Clock have legs? Is Time running out? | I have been incredibly honoured to have my proposal selected for a Burning Man Honorarium so this means that the installation will be funded in part by a grant from Burning Man, however this is a very large scale work entirely made of metal and the costs are very great so I am seeking support from art-lovers to bring this installation to life. | Who are we? I am Andrea Greenlees, a London-based artist, and this will be the seventh large-scale installation I have created for Burning Man since 2015 and the fifth that I have made in close collaboration with master steelworker, fellow artist, and engineer, Andy Tibbetts @lostmachineandy from Reno, NV. In the picture gallery you will see 'It's a Chicken and Egg Situation' (2017), 'Bebot' (2018), 'Bee Dance' (2019), and 'Queen Cobra' (2023). Making interactive big art is what we most enjoy in life, and nowhere is participation more enthusiastic than at Burning Man! Plenty of this history can be discovered on https://www.andreagreenlees.com All the fabrication is carried out in the fantastic facility that is The Generator in Sparks, Reno.
| Here we are building Bee Dance on playa in 2019: ....and building Queen Cobra in 2023:
We have a fabulous build crew - calm, committed, and unflappable - all very excited be building again in 2024! |
We can't wait to create The End of Time and build it on the playa for thousands to enjoy and subsequently to find an exciting permanent location where it may continue to entertain and amuse and confound all who see it for years to come. Work has already started and we need your help to fund the cost of materials. Your donation can help to make a beautiful numeral, a curly twisted hand, an enormous mysterious key, an exquisite heart for the Teacup, or the mirrored polished stainless steel blade of the giant sword - which is about the size of a telegraph pole! If you like the crazy concept, and if you believe in the power of public art to uplift and move people, please donate and please share the link with others! |
THANK YOU! |
