Harlem
follows Adiele, a young Nigerian immigrant who arrives in New
Orleans searching for greatness and purpose. There, he seeks out a
hoodoo priestess who grants him a supernatural singing voice capable
of creating deep emotional and spiritual attachment in anyone who
hears it. Believing this gift is his destiny, he travels to 1920s
Harlem during the Harlem Renaissance, where Black art, music, and
political thought are reshaping culture and identity. His
extraordinary voice quickly makes him a sensation, placing him at
the center of Harlem’s vibrant creative world.
As his fame grows, Adiele is taken in by a middle-class Black family and becomes caught between two sisters—one offering love and stability, the other driven by ambition and jealousy. At the same time, he is drawn into Harlem’s nightlife and elite social circles, where a powerful white socialite seeks to exploit his influence for her own gain. Unbeknownst to him, however, every performance creates a supernatural bond between himself and his audience. The more he moves people with his music, the more their souls become tethered to his, fueling his rise while slowly consuming his own life force.
What begins as a gift soon becomes a curse. As relationships unravel and the consequences of his power intensify, Adiele loses control of both his life and his voice. At the height of his downfall, the spirits that granted him his talent return to collect what is owed. Forced to confront the true cost of greatness, Adiele must reckon with a haunting truth: influence, desire, and artistry built on supernatural power demand a price that cannot be escaped

The creative inspirations for Harlem draw from the emotional power of Ray , the supernatural historical storytelling of Sinners , and the epic character study of Malcolm X . Like Ray , the film explores the rise of a gifted Black artist whose extraordinary talent becomes both a blessing and a burden. From Sinners , it takes the fusion of Black history, spirituality, folklore, and horror, using supernatural elements to examine deeper cultural and emotional truths. From Malcolm X , it draws its sweeping historical scope and its focus on a protagonist who evolves from an ambitious outsider into a larger-than-life symbol shaped by the forces of his era. Together, these influences inform a story that blends music, history, horror, and identity into a uniquely African diasporic tale set against the backdrop of the Harlem Renaissance.

The film will render 1920s Harlem as a living, immersive world shaped by rhythm, density, and emotional projection. The camera will move through streets, interiors, and performance spaces with an observational steadiness, often remaining at eye level to preserve intimacy within the crowd and ground the audience in lived experience. Harlem will be treated not as backdrop but as a responsive presence, its energy shifting between beauty and unease as music, language, and movement subtly alter perception. Lighting will emphasize warm, romanticized tones in moments of performance and social gathering, contrasted with deeper shadows in private or liminal spaces, reflecting the tension between aspiration and collapse. Jazz sequences will function as emotional anchors, allowing sound to shape pacing and rhythm, so that Harlem gradually reveals itself as both a historical place and a psychologically charged, almost sentient environment.

“ The film Harlem is born partly from my fascination with the Harlem Renaissance—a time that, I believe, shaped much of Black culture and art as we know it in modern American society—and partly from the immigrant experience. There were many Nigerian immigrants in Harlem at the time, and this story presents the era from their perspective. Then there are the film’s supernatural themes. It wouldn’t be me if there weren’t elements of magical realism and folklore. I grew up with oral traditions and found Southern myths and legends to be very similar to my Igbo ones. This blend of culture and superstition is what gives Harlem its originality.”
