About the Book

Glaeolia 1 is the first volume of our flagship indie manga anthology series GLAEOLIA. Swiftly heralded on multiple best of year lists across sites like TCJ and Solrad, Glaeolia volume 2 was subsequently awarded the 2021 Ignatz Award for Outstanding Anthology, and Glaeolia 3 was finally released earlier this year.

The book contained stories by 12 artists from the contemporary underground manga scene: Arantoochika, Hiuchi tana, Kawakatsu Tokushige, Masumura Jūshichi, mogcom, Moriizumi Takehito, Morita Rui, Okuda Akiko, Onta Niwako, Shinnosuke Saika, Yamakawa Naoto, Yosomachi, with cover artwork by Mori Masayuki. At the time, almost all of these authors were debuting in English. For those who had already had work published in English, this was their second publication, reinforcing that the selection for this book (and the series as a whole) was oriented toward an under-examined area of comics. There is a breadth of styles, storytelling, and artistic technique on display - between the nostalgia of Okuda Akiko's Watching the House, the carefully measured, elegiac tone of mogcom's Meeting at Mandarake, and the fantastic, delicately scratchy ink-water washes of Moriizumi Takehito's Spring Has Come, there is an incredible amount of artistic imagination packed into the thin space of these ~256 pages (and this is just scratching the surface). Meeting at Mandarake

Glaeolia 1 was first released in June / July of 2020 with a print run of about 300 or so, and quickly sold out in a few months. Since then, there has been a quiet but consistent demand for a reprint, and finally, last year we put out a survey to see if the interest was really there. And now, at last, we are running this crowdfunding campaign to make it a reality.

This reprint will be done using offset printing (the sample images on this page are of the risograph first printing), and will feature a few corrections to the manuscript and a slight redesign of the cover which is set up for RISO printing, as well as a sewn binding and soft touch lamination for the cover, in keeping with the first 3 editions of Glaeolia. But otherwise, no additional work is required. This book is ready to be reprinted, but this is where we need your help!

Spring Has Come

Project Timeline and Potential Issues

All production is basically finished, and we have materials on hand to reference from the previous edition. We will need to rework the files for the cover since the printing method is drastically different, but otherwise it is finished. So once this project is complete the book will be ready to go to print. We already have several years of experience with printing and publishing books having published many, many releases, and at this point I don't foresee there being any problems. After the campaign is finished I will send the printer the final print run order and lock in production and materials for the order. In terms of timing...

+ up to 1-2 month to order in materials for printing (this can't happen until the printer receives a finalized order after the campaign)

+ at least 3-4 weeks for printing

+ shipping to the EU and USA warehouses (anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months, depending on what shipping methods are available/affordable)

At that point, we will start fulfilling shipping to backers.

If this campaign is successful the book will debut at TCAF 2023 (in April).

* for instance, issues sourcing paper at the printers, backlogged shipping, etc.

In addition to this crowdfunding campaign, we will also open preorders separately through our website.

For international preorders - we will leave international orders open through the crowdfunding page and on our own website preorder page when it launches. We hope to make the book available through retailers internationally as well. Currently AAAPOUM BAPOUM comic shop in France has a large stock of our titles, and is tentatively planning to order in copies of Glaeolia 1 when it is available.

About the rewards

In addition to the books, we also have prints available with some rewards. The oratnir print is from Glaeolia 2, and the chizu wada print is from Glaeolia 3.
