Why are we crowdfunding?

Virtual Creator Con is a free-to-all digital convention. In an age of corporate consolidation over the convention circuit, it’s becoming increasingly more difficult for creators to attend shows and make money.

Table costs, transport costs, and accommodation costs are all increasing rapidly. Worse, entry fees are also rising, which directly impacts fans' ability to attend shows or buy from indie creators.

I started Virtual Creator Con to push back against this race-to-the bottom.

We don’t charge creators a table fee, we don’t take a cut of creator sales, and we don’t charge fans to attend or participate in any of our sessions.

And we want to keep it that way.

But running an event, even a digital one, comes with costs. We want to continue to run, and scale the event to reach a bigger audience, and showcase the works of more creators. In order to do that, we need funds to pay for the website, the software to record panels, and ideally we would love to hire someone to take care of administration and promotion.

We also want to support the crowdfunding ecosystem, which is critical for so many indie comic creators. Rather than setting up a sponsor page on our website, we thought we'd take a different route because we're trying to think and act differently. 

What will you get if you back our campaign? 

Besides that warm, gushy feeling of doing something selfless to support indie comic creators, you can also get your name (and other information if you choose) immortalized on the convention website, and even grab a unique VCC T-shirt. 

• $2-$40 - You'll get a social media shout-out and our undying thanks.
• $50 - You'll get everything in the previous tier, and also be immortalized on a special page on the con website.
• $100 - You'll get everything from the previous tiers, PLUS an awesome convention T-shirt. 

Who am I?

John is a writer of films, TV, comics, and prose and hosts the 49 degrees north writers podcast. His recent comic books include The Memory Machine, Acausal, Scratcher, and Offbeats, and he's had stories in numerous anthologies. His horror novella Three Tokens for Mammon was published by Black Hare Press, and he recently published the horror collection Sweet Delicious Candy, and the practical non-fiction book The Science of Crowdfunding.
