What happens to a professional botanist when he is stabbed by the thorn of a strange plant he can't identify? This is how "JOE PLANT:ORIGINS" begins . Follow the journey of Botanist , Joe Smith as he transforms into JOE PLANT; a human/plant hybrid gifted with plant growing powers. Our Botanical Hero decides to utilize his new found abilities to help restore degraded and dying ecosystems caused by human generated activity in the hopes of helping the Earth and its diverse species survive. He has made this his noble mission. And as he does so, it becomes a journey of self discovery while he deals with adversity from different sources which try to impede his success. He leaves behind his girlfriend and loyal dog to travel the world so he can complete this monumental task.
My motivation for writing and drawing this story came from my professional backgrounds. I have worked as a storyboard artist in feature film and animation. While working in these industries, I retained my keen interest in wildlife biology and ecology which I always had since I was a child. I studied both biology and illustration in college. I also had the opportunity to work alongside dedicated wildlife biologists and assist them with their field research on endangered and invasive species. I learned a lot while participating in these projects and contributed useful field data.
My character JOE PLANT is a culmination of all that I have learned. I decided to utilize my skills in art and writing to convey an environmental message that the public will find digestible and fun to read as well as informative. There is science based info in the story but it is presented with a humorous tone. This Issue is 45 pages of full color art . Each page is thoughtfully designed and there is never a dull moment within the storyline. The reader will find it fun to follow Joe along on his journey.
