Rain and Coffee and Sound Theatre hasn't added a story.
Sound Theatre Company Innovates Seattle Theatre!
Sound Theatre Company not only envisions a transformative world through theatre, but puts that work into practice through accessibility, intentional intersectionality in storytelling and theatre making, dignity to arts workers, and accountability. It is powerful to witness a company that so deeply listens. To their fellow practitioners, their volunteers, and the extended communities. Sound Theatre leads companies in our region in what it means to deeply invest energy, time, and talent in creating theatre practices and stories that centralize care and reimagine what our world can be.
Sound Theatre reminds us what a beloved community we truly have in Seattle and what it means to grow and tend an artistic community. It means compensating artists fairly for their time, labor, and creativity. It means leaning in on hard conversations and holding space for learning through storytelling. It means working with artistic practitioners and communities. It means investing in the stories and individuals who make Seattle’s arts scene. It means being flexible and innovative in how one practices the art of theatre.
Sound Theatre centers access and accessible practices for both its audiences and theatrical practitioners. It is due to this long-term investment that for the first time in history, Seattle theatre audiences can watch a live professional production with a set created by a Deaf scenic designer and lighting designer, in Sound Theatre’s upcoming production, Autocorrect Thinks I’m Dead .
Sound Theatre’s work ripples out throughout our region. Like the fabled tech companies that “started in the garage”, Sound Theatre is the launchpad for many artists and arts administrators throughout Seattle theatre. Sound Theatre’s innovation of practices and projects with storytelling and access includes:
- Centering access and accessible practices for audiences and theatrical practitioners
- Award-Winning Film, Changer: A Hand Telling
- Spanish captioning started with Cloud Tectonics , which led to larger theatre companies, including Seattle Repertory Theatre, in using these practices as well.
- Work with Dr. Nikki Yeboah to develop and stage a reading of 11th and Pine, based on community testimonials from the 2020 Capitol Hill Organized Protest
Join us in investing in Sound Theatre’s innovative present and future by donating today. Here are two ways to participate:
Rain
Sound Theatre’s seeds of labor and artistic investments blossom throughout the Seattle arts scene. Let’s make it rain on the seeds that Sound Theatre is planting for the 2023-2024 theatrical season. Make a donation of $100 or more to Sound Theatre before September 30th. #RainOnSoundTheatre
Coffee
For small organizations like Sound Theatre, all forms of funding makes the work possible. Sign up to make a small monthly donation of $5, $10, or $25-- think of it as buying a cup of coffee for some of the hardest working arts administrators and practitioners in town! Sign up for monthly donations here. #CoffeeforSoundTheatre
Sound
Bring your voice to Sound Theatre Company with your donation. Every little bit helps create the innovative theatre that powers our community’s storytelling! #SoundTheatreCompany

Caring for our community is a guiding principle for Sound Theatre.
Working with intersectional and disabled artists and our staff to bring untold stories to our community in and beyond Seattle is a labor of love and act of care. You, our audiences, return this care with the energy and engagement you bring into the room each night.
Now we are asking you for your care and support at a critical juncture. If you want to see Sound Theatre keep pushing the boundaries of theatre, crack open new stories, and continue to care for our community of artists and audiences, we ask you to make a donation today.
Why Now? Supporting artists and staff is a matter of justice.
Sound Theatre has much to celebrate! Now just past the midpoint of our season, we have exceeded our projected ticket sales so far this year, completed our very first playwright residency, and received our first grant from the Ford Foundation. We continue to sustain a fully-paid staff and fair compensation for artists.
But it's still scary out here in the world of pandemic recovery! Like so many theatres in Seattle and across the country, Sound Theatre continues to navigate the path out of the pandemic. Many of the grants that we receive are dedicated to specific projects. While ticket sales are recovering, we have not yet reached the ticket revenue we came to rely on before the pandemic. While there have been calls for government intervention to sustain American theatre through these challenges, Sound Theatre simply cannot wait.
To sustain strong support for our artists and staff, Sound Theatre needs to raise $75,000 by the end of September.
Will you help us? Your gifts will bring so much in return.
What will my donation support?
Donations will support Sound's operating expenses in the months to come, much of which will directly support Sound's artists and staff and make possible:
-
The September World premiere of Autocorrect Thinks I'm Dead. In this a theatrical experience unlike any other a horror comedy packed into a Deaf-centric script. Seattle playwright Aimee Chou takes on horror, a genre known for challenging culture and subverting expectations, in a piece that's sure to delight all audiences.
-
Fair compensation for the staff and artists that we work with. In 2023, through three productions, our first playwright residency, and more, Sound is supporting more than 100 artists! Sound's September World Premiere of Autocorrect Thinks I’m Dead employs a large company of artists, many of whom are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, including our playwright, director, scenic designer, lighting designer, properties designer, graphic designer, stage manager and crew.
-
Radical Hospitality Tiered Ticket Pricing , making theatre accessible for everyone, beginning at just $5.
- Accessible Theatre. Options we have offered this year include performances that are All-Vaccinated, English Captioned, Spanish Captioned, Sensory Friendly, and a Pre-Show Tactile Tour.
All contributions make a difference! Whether you give $5 or $5,000, your gift will support the boundary-pushing theatre that Sound is known for and the artists who are working to make it.
Bite-size monthly donations add up to a whole lot of helpful support. You can set up monthly donations directly on our website, and we'll add your contribution here so that it counts toward our total goal.
Your ticket purchases for Autocorrect help too, and we can't wait to see you in the theater!
We know that TOGETHER we can do this!
