KITCHEN TABLE MAGAZINE hasn't added a story.
KITCHEN TABLE #6: THE PIZZA ISSUE
PIZZA IS ONE THING WE CAN ALL AGREE ON, RIGHT? RIGHT?! One of the most lovable forms of food, pizza is the staple of late-night work and kid-friendly sports practice celebrations, fuel for drunken nights and stoned days, a salve for hungover mornings, a bribe for the friends who helped you move. It’s convenience food after a long day, or a divine meal worthy of many pilgrimages; a blank canvas for cultural masterpieces.
HELLO! MY NAME IS BRETT. I'm the publisher of KITCHEN TABLE MAGAZINE, here to take your order. No matter what style you're loyal to, we've got a slice for you. Besides our new issue, we've got a lot of "campaign rewards" available to you, to help us reach our fundraising goal, to pay our printing bill, as well as our wonderful writers, illustrators, photographers, creative managers, editors, and designer.
INSIDE THE PIZZA ISSUE
KITCHEN TABLE IS A MAGAZINE. An actual print magazine, that you can hold in your hands and whose pages you can flip through. It's a buffet of entertaining and deeply engaging stories loaded with lip-smacking art, toothsome illustration, and juicy photography. (Bib not provided.) Join us on an exploration of the beautiful, flawed, and interconnected web that is our food system. There's no other food magazine that's quite like KITCHEN TABLE.
- Feature Interviews w/ Jhy Coulter from Devoured Pizza in Kansas City, MO, and Kayla Abe from Shuggie's in San Francisco. Neither are professionally trained chefs, but both have critically acclaimed pies and the funnest design ever.
- A Coast-to-Coast Pizza Survey with two dozen Pizzaioli. If you aren't curious what pop-culture pizza moments inspire the nation's creative slice-slingers, what are you curious about?
- Totino’s Frozen Pizza-flavored Ice Cream (yes, you read that correctly) and the story of Rose Totino, a groundbreaking and overlooked pizza hero. Also a pizza-inspired cocktail for after you burn the roof of your mouth on said Totino's pizza because you couldn't wait five minutes for it to cool down. Not that WE have ever done that.
- Simpson’s Writer/Showrunner Bill Oakley Rates Frozen Pizzas. Simpsons. Frozen pizza. What more does a '90s kid dream of? Clearly Canadian and a box of Gushers?
- A Junk Food Fetish for Fake Pizza-Flavored Anything. A brave soul journeys through the world of faux 'za to see which conglomerate can best Willy Wonka the taste of a pepperoni pizza into an extruded corn/potato product.
- The Definitive Answer to the Eternal Question: Does Pineapple Belong on Pizza?
- (Totally lying about the pineapple question—the Known Universe itself will die before we agree on an answer.)
- So much more, and not entirely pizza-related: Recipes, lots of Recipes; Gardening Tips; a Food Fight; a Brief History of Teriyaki in the Pacific Northwest; the Best Whiskey You'll Never Taste. And for dessert? This Issue's Word from the Kitchen—Cannoli.
WHY WE NEED YOU
PRINT PUBLISHING IS A MAGNIFICENT GIFT. There's nothing like the tactile way that a magazine feels in your hands, the swoosh of pages turning, discovery. As part of our media diet, print publishing invites us take our time and enjoy the spread. What media we consume and how we consume it are as important as the quality of the food we eat. With 30 years of publishing experience under his (expanding) belt, Brett can deliver the goods, but we need you to make it happen. Print is magnificent, yes, but it is not cheap.
WHEN YOU BACK THE PIZZA ISSUE, you are joining the larger food community and helping us pay our world-class creators, without whom KITCHEN TABLE doesn't exist. You also commit to supporting independently owned small businesses and lift up a wide range of otherwise marginalized voices that mainstream media historically ignores. Real people, not corporations. People doing excellent things in a time when we need more real people doing righteous things. People like Sarah Yeoman Arnoff, who filmed our bitchin' campaign video; Josh Winegarner, who edited the footage into a story; and Steven Mo from Boogie Wizards who provided the skating-on-a-rainbow music. (Thanks, y'all.)

A CELEBRATION OF FOOD AND COMMUNITY
WE ARE A VOICE FOR INCLUSIVE FOOD CULTURE, sustainability, our relationship with place, and our ability to be present in a world of distraction, digital or otherwise. Through a lens of art and storytelling, we explore what we eat (including pizza), and how we eat, and why. Of what it means to be human. KITCHEN TABLE believes that we evolved in community and celebrates the things that bring us together, which of course means food. In a challenging world that often seems upside down, sometimes all we need to get through the day are friends and a slice to remind us that we're all in this together.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! Your generosity is most appreciated.
Who Wants the Last Slice?!

BRETT WARNOCK. CAREERS I HAVE KNOWN
In a previous career spanning twenty years I was a comic book publisher. With Chris Staros, I founded and ran a comic book/graphic novel company called Top Shelf Productions. We did A LOT of killer work together that I'm very proud of. I retired from Top Shelf 10 years ago in 2014, when we sold the company.
I've also worked in food service over decades as a bartender, waiter, prep cook, line cook, host, food runner, beer buyer, wine steward, deli clerk... what am I missing? (I'd still like to learn the ropes as a cheese-monger.) At present I'm still waiting tables and bartending at The Kennedy School, one of the McMenamins properties in NE Portland.
I dream that Kitchen Table might one day be the career on which I ride off into the sunset.
MORE ANNIVERSARIES
February 2024 is the 5-year Anniversary, for Kitchen Table Magazine. And 2024 also marks 30 years (THIRTY YEARS!) since i launched my publishing career as Primal Groove Press, in Eugene, OR with a mini-comic that I wrote and drew. And 35 years ago i started a parallel career in food service, when i took my first busboy gig, in Eugene, at Oregon Electric Station.
