Hola!
With the close of Hispanic Heritage Month this past weekend, the very first of our backers received copies of their books! If you have yet to receive yours or a notification that it's on its way; worry not. As I mentioned previously, paperbacks arrived before hardcovers and thus were shipped out first. I shipped off a handful of hardcovers this morning and the rest, which remain to be packed. I'm saving the biggest, most elaborate packages for last. I'm also waiting for a delayed shipment of activity sheets, which should arrive in the next day or so.
I had the quiet personal goal of getting this special little book into the hands of young readers in time with Hispanic Heritage Month. A goal I did not 100% reach, but I feel I got close. What matters is that books will be arriving with plenty of time to make great Holiday gifts. Plus there will be extras available for last minute shoppers. But more on that later; for now, click for an unboxing.
The Big Hardcover Update!
Great News!
The Deluxe Hardcovers for Lucy Veloz: High Flying Princess are at press. We promised additional pages and bonus matter but we didn't stop there. So inspired by the response to this campaign, author Alex Hernandez penned an additional story which we added to the book. That's on top of some of the Behind-the-Scenes features, which we featured in a previous update.
In adjusting the book to make way for these features I had to make modification to the wrap-around cover art. Due to the particular user-interface of our printer, it took me a few rounds of uploading and previewing to get that cover just right. Below, you can see a few of the iterations from that process.
It also turns out we had room to make the book even bigger. Literally. Not only will this book now be 80 pages in long, this deluxe hardcover will measure a half inch wider and taller - at no additional costs in shipping!
– Plus a Bonus Sticker!
All of this good luck resulted in the chance to give everyone a little something extra. As a thank-you for all the support for LUCY VELOZ: High-Flying Princess - all backers will receive this bonus sticker!
Finally, let me share this notification which I received while working on this update. A quick look at tracking information indicates that our books have passed through Cincinnati Ohio on their way to California. Perhaps they'll arrive before this week ends. That means if you need to update your mailing address reach out soon. I'll be in touch once packing begins.
As
always, thanks for your time & attention. More very soon.

Hispanic Heritage Month’s Sci-Fi Princess has Landed!
Hispanic American Heritage Month
(Sept. 15th to Oct. 15th 2023)
The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum join in paying tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society.
The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.
September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.
What better way to celebrate this month than to reveal the newly arrived paperback of Lucy Veloz: High-Flying Princess. As you know, author Alex Hernandez and I crafted this tale of adventure and inventiveness with the goal of giving the world a sci-fi princess that reflects a BiPOC future, and is the hero of her own adventures. After all, not all princesses need saving!
With these books in hand (and plenty of extras thanks to our supporters) I can now move forward with the Deluxe Hardcover!

Production Update!
Hi,
Quick and exciting update to share. Paperbacks are at press!
It took a few tries to make sure the book came together properly (note
the book spine in this proof). But the team behind the book's printing
were responsive so delays were minimal.

Bonus Story!
Author Alex Hernandez has generously penned a bonus story for the Deluxe Hardcover! I've been very tempted to add some new art for it, but first there are some bonus features to include in the hardcover, developmental artwork / behind the scenes stuff. For example...
Once
brief captions are written for this section of the book, hardcovers
will also go to press.

Just a couple of days from completing
Yay!
With just couple of days left, I’m happy to announce we've surpassed our funding goal. Our colorful little campaign is currently sitting at a symmetrical 101% with the help and dedication of 28 benevolent backers. While it may be entertaining to end this campaign with 30 or even 33 backers, I can recognize that as a manifestation of what I’ve occasionally called stretch-goal fever ; something I should write about in a future blog-post. In the meantime, let me share a broad outline of how I see this campaign’s conclusion.
Tomorrow: 8/22/23 4:PM EST | 1:PM PST Live Online
The Kid’s Comics Unite Live Stream Summer Spotlight comes to a close with this informal 1-on-1 conversation with founder/literary agent Janna Morishima. We’ll have a short review of KidsComicsUnite.com’s partnership with the Crowdfundr Kids & Y.A. Content Creator Spotlight. We’ll so answer questions added to the live chat or submitted in comments here or on the PLUGOarts.com blog.
8.23.23
On Wednesday we’ll celebrate the conclusion of this campaign with a return to the aTigersTale.com blog and a special WuxiaWednesday update.
Then I’ll begin production for the book. The paperback is ready to go and just needs a color-proof. The hardcover needs only a few more captions to accompany the additional back-matter and a book spine treatment appropriate for the hardcover. But, I must admit, I’ve found myself reviewing some of these alternate cover designs - perhaps one of them might be worth revisiting for the hardcover. What do you think?
Lastly:
there are a few enterprising backers who've opted for the more premium
perk; the Creative
Consult. I will reach out to each of you specifically once I've
flicked a few switches and turned a few knobs on the campaign part of
this endeavor. So watch for an invite to send me some info sometime
between campaign's close and August 31st.
Comment and questions are, of course, welcome especially during tomorrow's Live Stream!

Premium Perks Especially for Creators!
On
this week's Lucy Veloz update I'd like to talk about the newly added
Perks I've added to our campaign.
Earlier this Spring/Summer I’ve had the privilege of helping
creators develop crowdfunding campaigns for their comic projects!
All of which continue to succeed! Some we're part of the Kids Comics
Unite Crowdfunding Crucible.
Utilizing what I'm now calling the
Crucible
Method they each succeeded wonderfully. Have a look.
Each
of these projects were unique and required different approaches and
perspectives from me. For one campaign in particular it was more about
me cheer-leading and backing the book (of course). Still, I've
received some delightful feedback about what I was able to offer. I've
even received permission to quote such accolades here.
So
why do I mention these? Because while I scaled this modest little
campaign to take into account time devoted to the Crowdfunding
Crucible, in reality this project it intimately connected to the
others. As the final campaign from this cohort to reach it's funding
goal, I've decided to add perks to this campaign which directly draw
from the methods and theory which brought previous campaigns to success.
One Seat Available
I’m
offering one last chance to have me on your team for minning success
and opportunity from your precious project! One ambitious contributer
can benefit from this
5-week one-on-one coaching
program. This program is framed around the teachings
& theories of the Crowdfunding Crucible and it includes –
- Five weekly downloadable video-calls
- Suggested readings
- Worksheets & Homework.
All of it is designed to refine your project’s publicity and opportunity potential. These 5 weeks will be scheduled to maximize your production or campaign calendar! Whether it’s a book launch, a crowdfunding campaign, a pitch or proposal – The Creative Crucible method will help you achieve Lift-Off!
Join the Creative Crucible Now!
Perhaps you're not sure you can commit to a 5-week program. I've thought of that as well. This is why I'm also offering five instances of this more practical perk. Five creators can schedule a 60 Minute one-on-one video coaching call / consultation with the Creative Consult.
Lastly;
I've made one more reward available for those discovering this
campaign for the first time and are not quite ready to invest in a
coaching call/consultation or commit to a hard-copy of the book.
Now available – a DRM free e-book for less than
its cost on Amazon!
Inventing Lucy Veloz: thinking behind the illustrations
In this week's update I thought I would share the thinking and creative process behind illustrating Lucy Veloz. Art takes a long time to create and much of that process is often left unseen. So I've taken one illustration, the first one from the book - which was also the first one completed and presented its development. Its invention.
After reading the initial manuscript by author Alex Hernadez, I
worked on a series of conceptual drawings, along with a variety of
looser sketches, like the one above. Below you can see how the initial
concept drawing was developed. It retained some spontaneous secondary
elements while its primary elements were refined.
What follows are the additional illustrated and digital components (along with the addition of one of the aforementioned concept illustrations) added to this illustration. It would be the first full-page illustration for the book. As the story's establishing shot it had the task of defining the protagonist's look as well as her personality; as illustrated by the other visual elements.
- The wallpaper indicates her youth and the values of her society
- Her hero-worship is evidence by art on the walks and screen
- The variety of her sci-fi inventions reflect her creative drive
- So does the chaos of her room
- Note the toolbox, because she's always tinkering
- Plus a fancy rug because Lucy is still a Princess
This is the level of thought that went into every illustration in this book. I just wanted to share this one because it really does illustrate the special-ness of Lucy Veloz: the high-flying princess.
Did you know . . .?
Howdy!
Welcome
to this special update!
It's a special day today. Our High Flying Princess has reached the 48% on day 4 of our campaign. I think it's a reflection of the appeal of this special project. But there's a fun kind of special about today to accompany a variety of more serious commemorations. Today is a day for such characters as . . .
A.L.F., E.T., Ford Prefect, J'onn J'onzz, Mork, Sonic the Hedgehog, Starfire, Supegirl, Superman and The Transformers - to name a few.
It's Invite an Alien to Live with You Day!
Invite An Alien To Live With You Day is celebrated every year on July 21, to remember the four season run of the show Mork & Mindy (1978 - 1982) Starring Pam Dawber and Robin Williams. I barely remember this show about an alien, Mork (Williams) from the planet Ork visits Earth to study human behavior. Traveling to late '70s Boulder, Colorado in his egg-shaped spacecraft, he is befriended by a young journalist, the titular Mindy, who lets him live in her house. The show revolves around the at-the-time-obscure Williams’ hilarious portrayal of a bumbling alien trying to understand Earth culture. He'd sum-up the lesson of each episode in a dispatch to his home planet. The show was a hit and kicked off this extremely nerdy holiday.
Perfect for Lucy Veloz who has an alien encounter of her own. One which has her inviting her an adorable alien to live in her very own Sci-Fi Castle. These parallels were too sweat to ignore so I thought I'd share a couple of early character designs for our extraterrestrial house guest.
Added
to that, I thought I'd
also share this video. It's depicts the last illustration I created
for this finished book.
PS: I'd announced that the early-bird specials were ending last night, but I've quietly kept them in place. So those discounts will remain at least until sometime this evening.
Let me also share another reason to visit Crowdfundr today!
Three Bee
Honey is middle grade graphic novel about a young worker bee who
struggles to fit in and must choose between her passion for music and
her loyalty to her endangered hive. Fans of Rollergirl by Victoria
Jamieson and Click by Kayla Miller would enjoy this book.
Desi and Jon St. Amant are a husband and wife team of creatives, parents, beekeepers, and educators. They are the final members of the Kids Comics Unite Crowdfunding Crucible to launch their campaign. The Crowdfunding Crucible was the 6 week program which I has the good fortune to develop and teach for the express purpose of quickly preparing creators for the #KidsCreator spotlight these campaigns are participating in.
The
first of our Crucible campaigns is doing wonderfully: The Adventures of
Nicki and Ricky: Baffling Birds! - Comics for Young Naturalists
is perched happily at 152% with 15 days to go. Our second member
quietly launched Making
Ever-After: A Story on Little Mouse Feet about a week
ago, currently at 83% with 22 days to go, this campaign has a lot to
offer from a seasoned Children's Book illustrator. So we return to
Three Bee Honey who on day 1 has already passed the 30%
mark and looks adorable.
These are just the campaign I had a direct hand in preparing. There are more by fellow creators from the Kids Comics Unite community, all of which are worth a first and second look. You'll be surprised by what's being offered; not just in terms of quality and kind of book, but additional perks like custom art & prints to one-on-one calls will literary agents, editors and other pros.
I'm usually a last-minute-shopper - especially when it comes to holiday gifts, but that's already changed for those who I know enjoy a good read. I hope you'll feel similarly after reading (or skimming - no judgement) this update. I'm not the only creator out there working to have their art seen and appreciated, it's important to me that others also have a chance to see such new and inspiring works. Best of all there are many ways to stand-up-for & support the work of creators all around you. Especially those who are doing the work of inspiring and educating a next generation with their efforts. Simplest of all, support is as simple as a share.
So if you've no plans to invite a alien over, then maybe a click and a share will do the trick.
Have a great weekend!

Day 1: We have lift-off!
Yippee!
We've launched! It may not surprise many of you that I stayed up late to press launch mere minutes after midnight. Up to that very moment I was adjusting numbers and updating images! The party promoter in me insisted I do the math and add those 20% Off bursts!
This whole endeavor is a series of experiments in marketing & promotions; updates like this one also act as notes for the Do Better Next Time column. But I'll spare you too many details on that front, it should be a future blog post. For these updates I plan to aim for a more celebratory Welcome and Thank You!
So, in the spirit of that sort of fun - I could use your help. I'm hoping to come up with with a pithy title for these updates. Subscribers to my just-back-from-hiatus PLUGOarts MUSEletter will most likely know what I mean. But the best I could come up with was the alliterative Untitled Update #1. Looking at it typed out, maybe I should've gone with Space Journal after all. The price of a late night.
Staying up late (even after hitting launch) also made for a slower morning. But the delight of recognizing names among my first backers added a welcomed spring in my step. Something my life-coach was eager to make use of – time outside and away from (most) computing.
Returning
to my workstation I can now take a few moments to compose this update
and personally thank the fabulous five backers whose immediate support
moved this fun little campaign to the 24% mark before the end of its
first day.
Thank You
- Stephanie Pitsirilos a true to life Sci-Fi hero (& Wuxia Warrior) bending spacetime to be backer #1 exactly 15 hours ago - almost before I hit launch 🔮🕳
- Ken Lamug the newest addition to our growing community - his own campaign is fantastic! Go Petro!
-
Sarah Giles: Stalwart Supporter, Friend and Occasional Collaborator.
-
Kurtis Fujita: Kung Fu Master, Comic Creator, Kickstarter Collaborator, Friend and Co-Host on THE COMICS FU SHOW
- and let's call our last one The Backer with No Name!
Talk about an amazing starting line-up. From this starting point I'm hopeful that we can reach Legion of Super-Heroes level of inclusion to our ranks. But for now, a special something.
As of this writing our author Alex Hernandez has taken off on a more personal and much more epic journey – out there in the world. So in his place I will share with you some of the earliest resources used to develop what would become this precious project. These three Pinterest Boards which Alex curated for this purpose.

and
most Importantly…
I'll
have more to share in the near future.
So until then!

The Creators
A word from the author
Hi everyone, I’m Alex Hernandez writer of “Lucy Veloz, The High-flying Princess,” the story of a smart, brave girl who uses her marvelous inventions to become a superhero when the conquering Drood arrive on her planet. There’s science, adventure, valor and a whole lot of fun, all brought to life by the incomparable art of Patrick Lugo.
The book is an early reader, aimed at ages 6 – 8. It’s divided into short, manageable chapters with accompanying illustrations.
Super-Heroic Mission
As a parent of two daughters who love to read science fiction, fantasy and superhero stories, my wife and I strive to find books with compelling female leads. It hasn’t been easy, but we’ve managed quite a little collection over the years (Shout out to AMightyGirl.com for all the help!), but one thing is sorely missing from our kids’ book shelves: Latina heroes! We can’t find them anywhere. Certainly not in the realm of sci-fi/fantasy. My daughters do not see themselves reflected in the books we read. There are no niñas valientes that look or sound like them, going off on rip-roaring escapades, matching wits with shrewd villains and saving the day.
About Alex Hernandez
Alex Hernandez is a Cuban American science fiction writer. His work often explores themes of migration, colonization, and posthumanism, while blending the subgenres of space opera and biopunk. His first novel, Tooth and Talon, was published by EDGE. He lives in South Florida with his wife and two daughters.
The Big Bad
It’s not for lack of trying! Believe me, we’ve looked everywhere. Some mind-boggling statistics, because I’m a nerd:
Based on 2018 Amazon data, only 18% of the bestselling children’s books had a female protagonist and according to Time’s 100 Best Children’s Books of All Time, just 19% of the most critically acclaimed children’s books had female protagonists.
To compound things, a mere 5% of books published in 2018 depicted a Latinx character, as found by the Cooperative Children’s Book Center, School of Education, University of Wisconsin-Madison.
5%!!! In 2018! And that’s both male and female. If you look at only Latina characters, the percentage becomes abysmal.
You can help us change that. Support our campaign, get an amazing book and help Lucy Veloz, The High-Flying Princess zoom into the hands of children everywhere.
About PLUGO
I learned to read thanks to access to my older brothers' box of comics. Once I could pick them out for myself at the newsstand (or spinner-rack), I was doing so. An early facility for drawing (perhaps thanks to tracing those early comics) led the way to an education in art & design while pursuing the dream of someday working in comics. Not counting school papers my first comic art was published by Indie publisher Double Edge Comics in the 90's it was at this time Carmine Infantino would let me unofficially come to extra SVA night classes where he would personally review and critique the work being done on those page.
Soon after, I would leave New York to find work as senior designer for Kung Fu Tai Chi magazine where I created the long running comic series TIGER’S TALE. As a result of my worlk for Kung Fu Tai Chi magazine I was inviterd to illustrate the Children’s Picture Book LITTLE MONK AND THE MANTIS written by screen-writer John Fusco. It was awarded both the Book of the Year Honor from the Gellett Burgess Center for Children’s Literature and the Preferred Choice Award from CREATIVE CHILD MAGAZINE. This book was also selected for the personal library of the venerable Shi Yongxin (释永信) abbot of the Shaolin Monastery (少林寺) Denfang, China.
In 2021 my short comic story CONTRABAND saw print in the anthology SPECULATIVE FICTION FOR DREAMERS published by the Ohio State University Press. It was called a knock-out in a Publisher's Weekly starred review. Along with a selection of free-lance illustrations, my past couple of years have been spent self-publishing the graphic novel series A TIGER's TALE (volume 1. 2022 & volume 2, 2023) exclusively via crowdfunding.
