Save the Public Pianos in Golden Gate Park
Vandals and Weather Imperil Beloved Program
Over the weekend, vandals struck again in Golden Gate Park, destroying a beautifully restored piano in front of the Conservatory of Flowers. Flipped over and broken into pieces, both the instrument and its handcrafted rain cover were beyond repair.
This marks the third piano lost to vandalism in our four-year effort to bring public art to The Golden Mile. But the elements—fog, rain, and salt air—are just as relentless. Since inception, Illuminate has restored 12 pianos:
-
3 destroyed by vandals
-
8 succumbed to the elements
-
1 remains standing
But we have a plan, and we need your help.
- Illuminate is upgrading and will test an "outdoor piano". By investing in instruments designed for weather and urban durability, we eliminate the constant replacement cycles of traditional pianos, and ensure visitors never find their favorite spot empty.
- Piano House 3.0 We are engineering a third-generation enclosure for our donated pianos. This new "House" features a QR-code locking system and a moisture-controlled interior to significantly extend each instrument's life.
Join the Movement Your support toward our $50,000 goal ensures these pianos remain a permanent fixture of San Francisco. Whether you make a one-time gift or join our “Golden Mile Lover” monthly giving club, you are helping us keep the 🎶 magic alive.
With gratitude,
Team Illuminate
