Jay Stephens on The Land of Nod
A weirdo, stream-of-consciousness comic book about hard times, created by a recovering drug-addled punk, with all the disaffected Gen X sarcasm you would expect from an irreverent 1990s underground Zine. If there's a meaning, it's that there is no meaning. Or maybe the message is... don't take anything too seriously, or you'll grow up to be an asshole? In any case, after 34 years, somehow this stuff still seems funny! Look at wittle Jay's first cartooning!
I turned 21 in the spring of 1992 when I began writing and drawing SIN (featuring The Land Of Nod). Too soon after the black and white alternative comics crash of '87, and right at the cusp of the bigger comic book speculator bust. It was a stupid time to be putting out a bi-monthly indie comic. Risky business. And the business of comics in the early 1990s was, on the whole, overly serious. The mainstream superhero stuff had gotten ludicrously dark and histrionic; obsessed with shaking the 'comics are for kids' stigma. Art Spiegelman's Maus won a Pulitzer Prize in '92, kicking off a competition among small press creators over who would be next to be embraced by the literati. And in the midst of this artsy-fartsy 'for mature readers' reach for relevance, I decided to drop out of Art School and make gloriously dumb, immature comic books.

The Land of Nod pages coloured in black and red tones.
It seemed fun, and it felt like anything was possible, even though I had no formal comic book training, which you would think would be discouraging. But I was inspired by awesomely odd comics like Doug Allen's Steven, Bob Burden's Flaming Carrot, Greg Fiering's Migraine Boy, and Chester Brown's Yummy Fur, that lead me to believe that-- with even my limited skills-- I might be able to contribute. I had no idea how I was supposed to do it... There were no university-level graphic novel courses in the early 1990s. There were no graphic novels in bookstores. Scott McCloud's seminal book 'Understanding Comics' didn't exist. There was no such thing as a comics internet community. There was no public internet, yet. There was no plan.
I made these stories up as I went, writing myself into a corner, waking up the next day, and with an improv-like 'Yes, and...', fumbled my way forward. It seemed fun. And though I started out with no thought whatsoever about who might read these, I immediately began getting letters from readers around the world. Yes, actual hand-written letters... because there was no email. I made colourful little newsletters to mail back to my small group of fans. It was a very different time.
I learned to write and draw a little better in that first year. Learned to take the work of creating comics more seriously, even if the content remained decidedly unserious. You can see the growth happen in these very pages. And The Land Of Nod lead to new opportunities that I could not have possibly imagined at the time. All because my punk-ass D.I.Y. attitude made me want to create something that stood in opposition to the comics status quo... a rebellion against overly serious superheroes and self-indulgent autobio alt comics. Because my pure zero-fucks-given love of making things drove me forward despite all the obstacles. And because it seemed fun.

FAQ
Have a question that's not answered below? Send an email to mail@blackeye.ca
1. I have the Oni Press edition of Dwellings, how is this collection different?
The Black Eye Books edition is printed in the compact 5.75 x 8.25 trim size to match previous Jay Stephens collections Dejects and Jetcat & Friends. It includes all Black Eye Books issues cover to cover, the Bonus National Magazine Award-winning story "Journey Into Fear", the risograph and mini poster artwork from the crowdfunding campaign extras, and an introduction by Stephen Bissette. It's also available in both limited edition hardcover, as well as trade paperback.
2. How do I cancel or edit my pledge?
You may now cancel their own pledges up until 48 hours before an All-or-nothing campaign deadline. It's currently not possible to edit your pledge, but you do have the ability to cancel and re-pledge. If you have any questions or need assistance, please email mail@blackeye.ca
3. When will I be charged?
On campaigns with an 'all or nothing' goal (like this one), your pledge will be collected once the campaign is successfully funded and complete. On campaigns that are marked as 'keep it all' funds will be collected immediately at the time of your pledge.
4. I'm in the EU. Do you collect VAT? Will there be import fees?
Crowdfundr doesn't have the ability to collect VAT. If you're pledging from the European Union, please visit go.blackeye.ca/etsy and send a message with your desired rewards and a custom order will be built for you, VAT will be collected at the time of purchase and you will avoid costly import fees.
5. I'm in the EU and already made a pledge here, will I be billed twice?
Don't worry. Your pledge won't be collected here. You'll receive a message about paying via Etsy for your rewards. The good news is your pledge will count towards stretch goals and our total raised!
6. How will my copy ship?
Books are shipped flat in protective stayflat mailers. Shipment will be via Canada Post, Uni Uni or Fleet Optics within Canada, USPS in the USA, and either via APC or PostNL internationally. Canadian, US, EU and most international destinations will also be fully traceable with a tracking number provided via email when shipment occurs.
7. I used local pick-up in the past, why is it no longer available?
The logistics around local pick up became increasingly challenging for a small home-based publisher, and with Canadian shipping options much more affordable, we made the decision to discontinue local shipping.
8. Do you have retailer tiers available?
Rather than have set tiers for retailers, we prefer to offer retailers the opportunity to order custom quantities via our retail portal. If you've signed up for our portal already, once our project is fully funded, preorder copies will be available there. For access to our retailer portal sign up at: www.blackeye.ca/retailer-signup or click on 'contact campaign' to get in touch.
9. I can't find my contribution?
You should see your contributions in your Crowdfundr account under Your contributions. If you weren't signed in to Crowdfundr when you made a contribution, it won't appear in Your contributions.
