Love Thy beast is funded in part by the Burning Man Organization which has covered 60% of the total budget. The mission behind this project is to share the notion of radical Self-Love. Accepting ourselves and embracing every aspect of who we are. Love Thy Beast is a creation of art committed to evoking the power of self-reflection in order to ignite the subconscious mind and curate a space where we can greet our inner beasts with love.
This concept initially transpired through personal experiences that opened my eyes to the growth and healing that is necessary for me to gain control of my life. I know I'm not alone on this journey, which is why I feel compelled to share this project with others. I believe that art has the power to heal, inspire and potentially save lives, as it did mine. With your support, we can bring this installation to the Playa and spark conversations of inner healing and self-acceptance.
The installation features 7ft tall hand layup fiberglass sculptures shaped to figuratively suggest the human form. In the heart center of each figure lies the keystone: The element of introspection. An acrylic mirror is set into the chest of each figure which offers a moment to utilize our gift of sight to explore the depths of our reflection.
Each Beast is adorned with a handcrafted mask that depicts an otherworldly creature and boasts an ethereal and modern design. Each mask is unique, strikingly surreal and serves to represent the metaphorical masks we wear in life for preservation and protection. Made entirely by hand with concise armatures, prepped and sculpted with an aggregate sculpting medium. Each mask is truly one of a kind.
Rooted in the center of this sacred circle is a Playa-fitted merry-go-round. This kinetic element provides a visual shift in perspective and adds a touch of playfulness to the otherwise solemn tone of the installation as whole. From stillness to chaos, the viewer can create their own experience.
I hope that through the hard work of everyone involved, we can inspire others and help those who are struggling to love themselves and find a sense of purpose. We are all equal and our past does not define us.
