JOIN US ON A JOURNEY BACK IN TIME. A STORY THAT MUST BE TOLD. PLAY YOUR PART IN RESURRECTING HISTORY, AND BRINGING CLOSURE TO THOUSANDS!

OVERVIEW

Preserving Second World War British Indian Maritime Heritage, that being the ill-fated S.S. Tilawa. The Forgotten Tragedy. The Indian Titanic. A piece of missing history.

The 1912 Titanic incident has long received countless efforts to promote and feature its story through various mediums, whether that be through books, documentaries, exhibits, movies, etc. It is endless, and it continues to this day.

What makes the S.S. Tilawa story, and recent developments unique? Here are some brief points.

KEY POINTS

● A maritime tragedy of the Indian people during imperial British India, with present-day connections to the commonwealth
● The only known passenger ship twice torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in the middle of the Indian Ocean. 280 people died, and 678 people were rescued after floating for 2 days. HMS Birmingham and SS Carthage performed this rescue
● The discovery of the wreck site in 2017, as well as the silver bars
● HM King Charles III, previous UK PM Rishi Sunak’s office, and current UK PM Sir Keir Starmer, acknowledge the tragedy
● The First commemoration in the world at the Ballard Pier on the 80th anniversary, November 2022. The British Deputy High Commission in Mumbai India, lays a Tilawa wreath each year. Mr. Alan Gemmell, OBE, then British Deputy High Commissioner was chief guest in 2022. Tilawa departed from Mumbai for the final time. The Second commemoration was held at the National Maritime Museum, London Greenwich in November 2023. The recent third commemoration in Durban, South Africa, November 2024. Tilawa was destined for this port. Now, 2025, Leicester UK as many Tilawa family members are in the midlands
● Vice Admiral IC Rao, founder of the Maritime Mumbai Museum Society, and President Captain Kapil Dev Bahal fully support the work of Tilawa 1942
● Survivors have been found. Mrs. Tejparkah Mangat, Mr. Chotoo Khoosal, Mr. Arvindbhai Jani, and Mr. Gaffer Osman Ayoub. Previous survivor accounts have been preserved such as radio interviews. Emile Solanki has connected with families of Tilawa all over the world, such as Mr. Mervyn Maciel, as well as Her excellency, Uganda High Commissioner to the UK, Mrs. Nimisha Madhvani. Her mother, aunts, and grandmother were rescued. They were then welcomed and supported in Mumbai India by Mr. Nanji Kalidas Mehta (the grandfather of well known Mr. Jay Mehta, India)
● Tilawa1942 founder Emile Solanki’s great-grandfather drowned during the incident
● Mr. Solanki has delivered many public lectures on the subject
● The legal case of salvage may be another potential avenue of content featuring
● Since 2007, there has been consistent public awareness and appetite for this subject matter
● Fascinating connection to Earl James Mackay, Lady Elsie Mackay, S C Bose Indian Freedom Fighter
● Individuals/companies connected to the Ernest Shackleton Endurance National Geographic documentary found Tilawa and salvaged its silver

KEY INITIATIVES

Since 2007, our approach has been to produce the first ever secular book and documentary on the forgotten tragedy. It could encompass the history of the ship, its usage, the incident, the survival, the rescue, the connection to Subash C. Bose, the stories from all over the world that have surfaced, present day developments with bringing the tragedy “out of the abyss,” such as the global support group, 4 international commemorations, and of course the discovery of the ship with its silver, and associated unprecedented legal case of salvage in-rem claims.

It is safe to say that the target audience is Britain, India, USA, Canada, and other Commonwealth nations such as Australia, New Zealand, and those on the continent of East and South Africa.

As regards the silver, there is much scope. How it came to be known, what went into the research. How did Argentum find the ship? What was the expedition like, including the salvage and delivery back to the UK? A summary of the legal matter. How did Argentum became involved with helping to ensure this incident is no longer a forgotten tragedy.

We have already gathered several stories, media content, and engaged various ones to contribute similar.

PROJECTS COST $$$$$

1. Costs associated with the Tilawa 1942 setup, and organizing 3 commemorations in Mumbai India 2022, London Greenwich United Kingdom 2023, Durban South Africa 2024, Leicester UK 2025. These costs include items such as, but not restricted to: domain, email, website, marketing, flights, hotels, meals, transportation, site access fees, guest refreshments, commemorative lunches and dinners, commemorative gifts and souvenirs, printing, photography, videography, clothing, video editing services, graphics design, etc.

2. Permanent plaque/memorial/exhibit: At this juncture it is unknown how much such an endeavour in the UK would cost. We hope to have a better understanding, after engaging with various UK Government agencies that have oversight of this. We have also written to His Majesty The King, Charles III, as he has recently become Patron of The Royal Museums Greenwich, following the death of his late father, Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh. A model to scale of the S.S. Tilawa ship.

3. Two books are required. One fictional based on the film script, and the other as a secular historical resource on everything Tilawa.

4. Film Script: The first draft of a film script has been completed, and is being reviewed.

5. Documentary: Our team have visited MIPCOM Cannes twice, to discuss the project with distributors. An excellent example of a similar production is Titanic: 20 Years Later with James Cameron. It was fascinating to hear Don Lynch and Parks Stephenson. I have made contact with both, and consider them light acquaintances. A reenactment of the ill-fated S.S. Tilawa would be appropriate.

6. Ongoing research fund

7. Film Production: Films such as Victoria and Abdul, The Viceroy's House, Gandhi, Titanic, Lion, and other British Second World War period classics are good examples.

8. Silver Bars: Purchase of silver bars to Tilawa 1942, British Museum OR National Maritime Museum Greenwich, and perhaps the India National Maritime Museum.

9. Usage of contents. The research, photographs, videos, and similar items related to the wrecksite, is a key aspect to this entire proposal.
