🎥 Urgent Call to Action: Support Our "For Kids Like Me" Documentary Series Project 🎬
We are excited to share the development of our transformative documentary film, "For Kids Like Me." This vital project exposes the harrowing impact of mandatory minimum sentencing laws on families, especially the children left behind. Did you know that over 2.7 million children in the U.S. have an incarcerated parent? Mandatory minimum sentencing laws have led to the disproportionate incarceration of minorities, exacerbating social and economic inequalities. Taxpayers spend billions annually on the prison system, funds that could be redirected to more constructive community programs.
About the Documentary Series
Inspired by my daughter, Anyé Young, and her book, Teen Guide to Living With Incarcerated Parents, we delve deep into the struggles faced by families with incarcerated loved ones. Anyé's personal journey as a teen with an incarcerated parent led her to advocate for prison reform, and her experiences inspired this documentary. The series will start by introducing Anyé’s journey in Episode 1. Subsequent episodes will feature other advocates she has met along her journey, including:
-
Cedric Young: Anyé’s father, who was a child with an incarcerated parent and later served a 12-year prison sentence.
-
Anna Tovchigrechko: Founder of the Unlocked Project, which provides peer support for children of the incarcerated.
-
Yasmine Arrington-Brooks: 2023 CNN Hero and founder of ScholarCHIPS, a nonprofit that provides college scholarships and support to children of incarcerated parents.
-
Bree Anderson: Co-founder of Daughters Beyond Incarceration (DBI) in New Orleans, who helps girls whose fathers are in prison. Bree's father was wrongfully convicted and spent 24 years in prison before being exonerated. Bree has dedicated her life to breaking the cycle of incarceration and supporting girls through mentoring and advocacy.
- The U.S. Dream Academy: An organization dedicated to helping children of incarcerated parents and children falling behind in school by providing mentoring and academic support. The Academy’s holistic approach aims to break the cycle of incarceration by empowering children to achieve their dreams.
More inspiring advocates will be announced soon.
Our Goals
As the executive producer and director, I aim to complete the development phase by early 2025 and start production by summer 2025. We plan to release the film by the end of 2025 and share it globally to provide resources and lessons for young adults and children with incarcerated parents.
Why This Project Matters
Families Affected by Unjust Laws: The film follows Anyé Young's journey, highlighting her efforts to raise awareness about the adverse effects of mandatory minimum sentencing laws on families. Through heartfelt interviews with affected families and discussions with experts, "For Kids Like Me" sheds light on the urgent need for sentencing reform.
Universal Impact: This documentary is not just about those who have been directly impacted by incarceration. It’s about advocating for fair and just laws that affect the whole of society. Every taxpayer’s money goes into maintaining the prison system. By understanding and reforming mandatory minimum sentencing, we can redirect resources towards education, healthcare, and community development.
Global Perspective: Mandatory minimum sentencing laws are not unique to one country. Similar laws exist worldwide, impacting millions of families. By supporting this project, you are helping to shed light on a global issue, sparking international dialogue and potential reform.
Broader Impacts: The effects of parental incarceration extend beyond the children affected. It impacts their caregivers who take on the additional burden, the incarcerated parents who are often isolated and disconnected, and society as a whole which bears the social and economic costs.
