Aside from backdating deadlines AND buffering, I usually have a line graph with two lines of my ‘suggested progress’ and ‘actual’ progress.

So if it’s 40 illustrations, that can be one axis and the other axis is time. It helps me to see how fast or slow I am as it’s happening, and to reference on later projects to see that I often work fast, then a little slow, and then fast again so it’s okay if my actual progress line dips below the suggested progress. Ergo I do not work every day on production but I try to work as much as possible early on since other aspects (out of my control) might delay production.
