When we released Fox Magic in 2009, it was a slim 93 page foray into Japanese religious mythology with eight kitsune breeds. Players guard their domain from dangerous beasts, human predators, and ghosts, led by the game master in the form of the Fortunes. It was made to be setting light, so it could be placed into any era for play, and theme flexible, so it could be a light-hearted romp or horror-filled crawl and anything in between.
It used the Story Point System (SPS), a player-facing system of dice rolls and story points used to perform extraordinary feats, special powers, and generally progress the plot in interesting ways. The art was simple in black & white but plentiful.
Since then, we have improved the mechanics and created the Advanced Story Point System (ASPS), a richer and more nuanced update to the original SPS. Since we updated the ruleset, we decided to revisit this game and give it some polish as well! In addition to an update to the rules, we're expanding the game to include Chinese animals, Korean foxes, European foxes, and North American tricksters. We may also add other Japanese shapeshifters such as the Tengu and Tanuki.
